New to site, looking for opinions on the 338 lapua from some experinced shooters. Have built many 308s and 300 win, am looking for a long range tactical build. Pros, cons ?. all the hipe is on 338 lapua, and i am assuming for a reason. i see ammo is tough to find, or $$$$ more so. any thoughs or opinions ?

Re: 338 lapua or 338 win

i do handload, and that is what would prob, happen anyway. i hav a remington 700 actaion and surgon action. blow out the bolt face and go with the 338 lapua?

Re: 338 lapua or 338 win

If you want .338 Lapua ballistics in a cheaper to shoot package, check out the 7WSM shooting 180 Bergers or better yet JLK VLD's.

Re: 338 lapua or 338 win

For starters the 338 Lapua has a substantially bigger fuel tank than the 338 WinMag. This allows you to shoot a 250 gr bullet at +/-3000fps or a 300 gr bullet at around 2800 fps. The long range ballistics of the Lapua are better. As mentioned the 7WSM is a good alternative IF you can get your rifle to shoot a 180gr VLD properly and at a decent velocity.

Re: 338 lapua or 338 win

Yea. i pulled the ballistics from the lapua and many others on the sierra ballistics software, and love the lapua. again i have never ventured into a build of the heavy bullet calibers. I put a 50bmg ar upper on, but am looking for a solid, accurate, tactical buile witihout the weight of a 50. ? thanks for the help !

What breaks hav you used on a 338, that work well. I have a few hollands breaks and they work well, i was looking into the ops inc break? any thoughts

I collected all the prices and labor to build this gun and Thunderbolt is taking a several hundred dollar loss. unless your a dealer and a gunsmith you will save 6 or 700 buying it new from him now... Hes crazy I wouldn't let it go that cheap but its great for us...

Re: 338 lapua or 338 win

I am just getting into gunsmithing. I have been doing it ont he side for few years with a friend of mine is a custom smith, and trying to open a shop up in pa. But your right i know thunderbolts it is cheap, and even if a gunsmith builds it it is still not cheap? i will do it as a project over time, along with all the others i want to start. GUNS are a bad habit, too addicting !! Alot of people dont realize what time and money goes into a custom build like that 338. Nice actions too thunderbolt, got all four, nice

Re: 338 lapua or 338 win

Yes I know I bring my uncle down to shoot prarie dogs. His first year i brought him down he shot more dogs in one day than his whole life shooting ground hogs. I was born in Oil city, pa. But god brought me to Texas 6 months later.

Re: 338 lapua or 338 win

LOL, i bet. I do construction right now, and i just finished up a house for a couple that moved from texas. they said that there is nothing to do here.lol..down there tags are unlimited for pigs, praire dogs. must be a field day. sounds like fun. the problem is there is not enough aera to hunt up here. i grew up on a farm and was lucky. everyone posts property up here.

Re: 338 lapua or 338 win

Ok you say you already have the standard magnum boltface on 2 actions. if you want more power than the 338 Win mag look at the 338 Remington Ultra Mag it will fit in the action allow you to use factory ammo and the mag length will work aswell.
Mow if you wanted to have the same performance as the 338 Lapua on that action and also have the best performance with 300gr projectiles then a longer mag would be best and a Wyats extended box works for an internal system or a Seekins is awsome for a detachable setup. as for calibres dont play with the boltface just get a 338 Edge reamer and run it in it is the 300 ultramag necked to 338 with no other changes. it is perfect for your situation fits the standard mag boltface neck up 300 ultramag cases or neck down 375 untramag cases and shoot them with 300gr projectiles you will have the best of both worlds.

Hope this helps.
