338 lapua

Re: 338 lapua

It is not cheap to shoot, even if you are a reloader. I think many fairly new shooters think they want the "best" caliber and enter the game and purchase a 338LM and realize its not ideal for training. I don't know your skill level, but in all honesty the 338LM is designed for ranges the standard short and long action rounds just cant achieve, a 300WM with a 210+ gr bullet will do alot out to and past 1500 yards and for a lot less cost than the 338LM. If your mission requirement calls for a 338 than thats a differnt story.

Nothing is cheap with the 338LM unfortunately. If you dont reload, Southwest Ammo is the place to get ammo for cheaper price without compromising accuracy. Strongly recommend them.

Re: 338 lapua

I have learned a lot from owning two 338 Lapua's, how to do it cheap is not one of them. If you do decide to get one you will want to reload. And when it comes to brass you will want to minimize your headaches by going with lapua brass.

Re: 338 lapua

I've accumulated 338 Lapua brass over the last 7 years. I has cost me anywhere from $1.50-$2.50 a piece. The good news is once you've accumulated Lapua brass, it will last a long time, especially if you anneal it.

338's are fun. They destroy coyotes, pigs, javelinas, and most things they come up against. I'm on my 4th 338L (HD Rifles, AI AWSM, DTA, PGW Timberwolf). The rifle may not stay the same, but the caliber will always be in my safe.

Re: 338 lapua

If you have another rifle to shoot regularly, I say get one!

I agree with superde! The .338 is a blast to shoot. Sure the cost to get one going is outrageous, but I get a big grin on my face when the MRAD launches a 300 grain missile downrange and it HAMMERS the steel....

Re: 338 lapua

I do reload have a lock and load progressive and a rock chucker. Stupid question but there is no problem using the rock chucker for the 338? Local gunshop has a 110 Ba for 1999 it keeps calling to me!

Due to the length of the round, your going to have to put the charged case in the shell holder, and slide bullet past the case neck up into the die.

I'm looking at 338 myself. Casually. I had no idea you could pay people to reload your brass? Can you spec OAL and the like? Or is it just their preset load?

Re: 338 lapua

338 is a super fun gun to shoot. There are most likely very few of us on the hide that really use any of these things for work but just love to play. After you get over the first round of brass it is downhill from there

SW loads it like their normal .338 offerings, which is very accurate out of my rifle (well under MOA). If you want something specific, you can try Dallas Custom Reloads. Chad is a member on here.

Re: 338 lapua

Yeah - I pay someone to reload mine. Doesn't seem to cost much more than reloading it myself and I'd rather be shooting than reloading.

The 338 is my favorite rifle to shoot at any range. I've since sold my 308 because it just didn't have the same "wow factor" after using the 338 a few times. Not really practical but it is a lot of fun

I shoot way too much to do 338 full-time. I just reloaded over 300 round of 308 for my main rig. I'll be done with that sooner than I like to think about.
