I have a Browning BAR MKII Safari Edition (w/o the boss system) chambered in .338 WIN MAG and I've been having accuracy problems pass 100 yards. At 100 yards I can cover my groups with my fist but would like to do better than that. I'm using Federal 225gr Nosler AccuBond ammo and Remington Corelokt 225gr ammo. I know custom ammo would be more accurate but I dont have the means to get it just yet. Is there anything else I could do to improve the accuracy?

You can try to tune the barrel with the BOSS system. Unscrew or screw in the BOSS a turn or two at a time, and shoot a 3 shot group to see if it improves. The BAR's are not known to be the most accurate rifles. If you are getting 2-3" groups at 100, then that's about right. It won't be an accurate long range rifle.

when you play with off the shelf stuff....you get what you get......if you wish to play on the next level....one learns that to make it happen....you got to massage the variables and conspire to make the moon shot a reality.

With a 338WM, you can't afford NOT to reload. Decent factory produced ammo costs a small fortune ($2.50-$3/round) and you aren't going to get shit for accuracy with the Remington Cor-lokt crap. If you get a cheap, single-stage reloading kit, 338WM dies and supplies, you'll have made your money back within a few hundred rounds and you'll be able to wring the most accuracy out of your rifle possible.

Short of that, you are going to have to start spending a fortune trying different ammo/bullet combinations until you find the sweet-spot for your rifle. Try the following:

1) Cor-Bon DPX Hunter loading with 225gr Barnes TTSX bullets;
2) Hornady Custom 225gr SST (this ammo is about a cheap as you'll find at <$40/20 rounds, but it is excellent stuff); and
3) just for shits and giggles, try a lighter load like the Federal Premium Vital Shok loaded with a 180gr Nosler AccuBonds.

Sorry, didn't see the BAR listing. Qwik-crete may work.

Re: .338 WIN MAG Accuracy Problems

They can be bedded in a similar manner to the M1 Garand, but you may or may not see a marked difference in how it shoots. You can pull the forearm and relieve it in the areas where you can see evidence that it is rubbing/contacting the rifle (I promise you...you won't have any trouble finding them).

The other thing to check is your barrel to find out how far off the lands the factory loads you are using are running. You may be getting a ton of bullet jump. You want your loads (HINT...START RELOADING) to be 0.002 or so off the lands (or the max length that your mag will allow you to seat them and still feed from the mag).

Dixie,

Does the barrel touch the stock at any point along the forend? I can't remember if they did a pad or not..If there is a pad, you can sand that out, and 'bed' a new one in. I've helped a few of that sort that way. I've also gone the wrong way on a savvy savage fruitwood laminate, cut the pad out, free floated, went from 3/4 moa to 5 moa...

Re: .338 WIN MAG Accuracy Problems

Thanks for the input everybody. I don't have the BOSS system on it unfortunetly but I found a guy my father-inlaw works with that reloads .338 for his rifle and offered to load some for me alls I have to do is by the short dies b/c he relaods for a blot action. The forearm doesnt touch the barrel or action that i can see although there is more clearance on oneside more than the other. I'll try the hand loads and check the lands and post the results. And yes factory ammo for this gun is OUTRAGEOUS! Corelokts are $45 the federals are $64.99 and the winchesters are $54.99 but I got the gun for a deal so oh well.
