338 Wm Loads

I went threw 23 pages of info here and can't find anything related to the 338Wm except two post that have gone unanswered.
I was wondering what is wrong with the 338Wm?
Is anyone here shooting this cartridge?

I have a model 70 supergrade in .338 win mag. I reload for every caliber I own, except that one. I just don't shoot it enough to justify a different powder. Its not very pleasant to shoot and after I found a factory load that it likes (Barnes 225gr TTSX) I just bought two boxes of ammunition and called it good.

70.0 h4350, 225 nosler accubonds gets me at 2820fps. This load is above max load that's in the book, but my Sako has no heavy bolt lift and the primers are good.

Thanks for the responses sorry I was so late responding to your answers I was preparing for a hunting trip and forgot to check back here.
I settled on a load of RL17 with a 210gr PT for 3025fps

Yeah, I'm shooting one, but am having hell finding a load that it likes.

The best I've found to date is 230 ELD-Xs in front of 70.5 gr of H4350. Win brass, CCI 250 primers, 3.411 COAL, which puts the projectile .010 off the lands. I'm seeing right at 2900 FPS out of a 26" barrel.

Accuracy is around 1.0-1.25 MOA, which sucks. The search continues.

I’m really interested in that bullet for an elk round. Once I shoot out my 225 I’ll try it out. If you find something that shoots under moa I’d appreciate the update.

Been a while since I could get back to this thread but just for reference on the R17 powder load with a 210gr Nosler PT 73.6 grs of R17 with the 210gr PT seated .025" off the lands the velocity was running 3023fps avg for 10 shots and when sight at 3" high for 100yds I could hold dead on a 12" gong at 400yds and hit every time shooting off my pack as a rest. 100yd groups were averaging under .75" for 5 shots.
Now I'm going to have to rework the load since I have picked up a new to me M70 Classic in 338Wm so the fun begins all over again.

Truck driver; try out the new 230gr eld-x, they shot awesome in all my 3 .338 win mags. This year I Harvested a cow elk at 890 yards with 1 shot.

I’m using RL19 and 200 grain accubonds. I didn’t try very many powders at the time, but it wouldn’t shoot the 220 grains rounds well which is why I settled on the 200’s.
I probably have 200 rounds ready to go but haven’t shot it in over a year. Might have to dust it off this summer if my moose trip pans out.

I got the M70 last week and broke it down and cleaned everything , mounted a different scope on it and threw together 10 get me on paper book loads out of the Speer manual. The scope is a Burris E1 with a G4 E-dot
72.0grs of R19 and the 200gr HC seated .015" off. Book says 2592fps out of a 24" barrel. Bore sighted at 25yds and went to 50 to center things up and walked it out to 100yds to tweak it. First shot 3" right at 3 o-clock and and over adjust , #2 landed 3" left at 9 so I split the difference and #3 landed at 11 so I droped down an 1" an #4 was at 9 but close so 1/2" right and the next three landed center.
This is a stock M70 Classic with a stock heavy trigger pull .
Maybe not up to some standards but I'm happy with it since it is a hunting set up and it has room for improvement.

69.7 of RL17 behind a 230 ELD-X and lit by Federal 215s is getting me 2980-ish (out of a 26" 9.4-twist barrel) with an ES of 14 and an SD of 5.0. The grouping is less-than-ideal at ~1.25 MOA or thereabouts, so I'm going to start playing with seating depth from here and see where it goes.

Very curious to see how the 230s work out.
RL 17 gives good speed in the 338 wm from what I have seen with my use of it.

Loaded up two sets of seating depth tests, each with 5 rounds jammed to the lands, 5 rounds .040 off the lands, and 5 rounds .080 off the lands. I am running a version of the Berger VLD seating depth test. I don't have enough room to do the final suggested loads at .120 off the lands; I am out of seating stem length and case capacity at .080 off.

Anyhow, I am trying 69.7 gr of RL17, and 70.5 gr of H4350, both in new Hornady cases lit by Federal 215s. Based on earlier testing, I expect that the H4350 load will be ~75 FPS slower than the RL17, but if it gives me better accuracy, I'm willing to make the tradeoff.
