I'm very interested in a 338LM build.

Basically, I'm looking for a +/- 12 - 14 Lbs rifle with scope and can included.

I need a rifle that is light to mid weight range, I do a lot of spot & stalk here in NM. Game - Mule Deer, Elk, Barberry, Coyote, etc...

Just looking for some direction / advice. Also, what is the optimum length for 338LM - Max & Min? Again, this will be somewhat of a carry rifle - spot & stalk, hill, canyons, mountains...

I'm open to suggestions on this build, gunsmith, action, bbl maker & length, trigger, stock, scope.

The only thing I'm sure about is, I'm going to put a AAC Titan Can on it.

I have to admit after seeing a recent build project 338LM with a 22" bbl and Titan can, I have become very smitten!!!

Any advice and or direction is greatly appreciated!

Rick

Re: 338LM Build Questions

In my opinion, if you're planning to pick your 338LM rifle off the bench and/or put a can on it...you must have a Desert Tactical Stealth Recon Scout. http://www.deserttacticalarms.com/

I have one and it's as accurate and has as good of a trigger as any of my friends similarly priced bench guns.

Score High in Albuquerque does some nice work. There is also a smith in Ruidoso, although his name eludes me now, that some some really nice work. His back log is around a year right now.

Re: 338LM Build Questions

my 338 has a lawton 8500 action, jewell trigger,
mcmillan a5,
seekins dbm,
29in fluted benchmark barrel remington varmit contour with a brake
and weighs 12.5 pounds with out a scope or bipod
if you went with a shorter barrel you could get the weight down pretty good

Re: 338LM Build Questions

it depends i think if you can get an action and have it done
it might be cheaper.
i am not saying this as fact because i am not sure,
but i think if a smith supplies all of the parts and builds a rifle then you MIGHT have to pay an excise tax.
i dont know if that is a federal thing or a local state thing

Re: 338LM Build Questions

I am in the same situation, I am seriously considering ordering a DTA SRS in 338. I have been reading about them for a couple weeks now, the pros definately out weigh the cons. Haven't heard anything really bad about them.

Ill assume your talking about my 338 that Bobby Lawton did?
Military tested barrels as short as 18" but that is to short for me. Id go 20 or 22"

Have Lawton build it and use his action and barrel. He will get the rest for you. easy as pie
