i picked up a steyr pro hunter in 376 caliber locally along with 1000 rounds of new ammo, which the guy had. i got a pretty sweet deal on it all, so i cant complain.

anyway, after playing around with the rifle a little, im not a huge fan of it. im prob gonna try to sell it, but the ammo would be to much of a pain to sell, so i was thinking about possibly doing a 700 remington it in.

i was wondering if a standard long action would work with a hinged floorplate, and how hard it would be to find a smith with a 376 reamer?

It could be done. IIRC it's about a .500 case head and 3.1" OAL. You'd be better off with a Mauser action for that, 3.1" is about perfect. Maybe in a Winchester.

if i were to go with a 700 action, would it work with the stock magazine (blind box or hinged floor plate), and which action would you need...the 30-06 or 300 win mag type bolt?

also, what would make the mauser a better choice? i always liked the remingtons because of all the aftermarket option.

thanks

I'm a little confused, why exactly would this round not work in a LA 700? Max oal, 3.0750 inches, and case length: 2.35inches, do the RUM rounds work out of a long action 700? I believe there is even 338LM on a 700, looking at rounds such as the 8mm Rem Mag, I believe the ability of a LA 700 to handle the Styer round would be more than okay. But some of you guys have some better info than I, please explain it so an average guy can understand it! Thanks for your help in advance!

here is what ive found compared to come other cartidges...

30-06
rim dia. 0.473
case length 2.494

300 win mag
rim dia. 0.532
case length 2.62

376 steyr
rim dia. 0.494
case length 2.35

So...the 376 is short enough that it should fit in a long action remington.

Since the rim diameter is between a 30-06 and a 300 win mag, would this mean tha i should get a 30-06 donor action and then open the bolt face up to accept the 376 rim?

im assuming a bolt face can be opened up by a smith, but if it is, will the extractor still work correctly and not give any troubles?

i stuck the shells in a tikka long action magazine and they fit perfectly and also stuck some in a dakota 375 h&h blind box magazine then they also seems to fit like the were made for it.

on a remington, with a hinged floorplate, is the piece that pushes up on the shells the same for all calibers in a long action? it is close to a 300 win mag case diameter than a 30-06, so id need a 30-06 bolt, and the hanged floorplate magazine parts out of a 300 win mag, if they are even different?

You still liking the ammo? I'm gonna be in North Arkansas, just south of Branson in early November to pick up my M35a2. Kick it around and shoot me a package price, we might have to meet in the middle............
