Rifle Scopes 4 round sight in ..... why do people fight this.

I shoot alot at a range..... I usually with quality products can get a sight in at 100 yards with 4 rounds...... I shoot a target with one inch blocks on it..... I shoot one round at 25 make scope adjustments. Shoot at 50 and make adjustments. Shoot a two shot group at 100 and make adjustments........ not hard and works 95 percent of time....

I have tried to explain this to people this summer at least 30 times........ nope they start shooting at 100 with a sight in looking down in the barrel..... idiots.......

anyone else run in to this at the range......

I generally do the 100 yard thing, with a look through the bore for initial scope setting. Generally first round within 6" of aimpoint. No trick to get centered up in 4 shots or less.

I don't think I'm an idiot.

I don't even use a grid target. A mildot reticle works fine for figuring corrections on plain old cardboard, at any distance.

Funny. I guess I am an idiot. I can usually boresight from the bench and get the bull in 3 or less. With a spotter I can usually get her there in two shots. I haven't shot a centerfire rifle at 25 yards in many years.

I typically shoot three at 50, then make an adjustment. Then three more at hundred, adjust. Then a group to confirm zero.

I can tell you why they do it that way, as do I.

No one wants to wait for three or four " all Clear" to go downrange and move targets. That might take two hours at some ranges.

FWIW, if your vision is any good, boresighting thru the barrel works pretty good, aka, first round on paper. If your holds are solid, scope tracks, and you can read the target from there, four rounds at 100 is not unreasonable to get dialed in.

Guess I'm an idiot also. Bore sight at 100, always within 6 or so inches sometimes within 2, make adjustment and go for group. We just helped a friend this week with his new 300RUM, he wanted to do the 25 yard thing, told him to take it to the 100 yard line. He stopped at the 25, said keep going, then he hesitated at the 50.... keep going and finally got him to the 100 line. Son bored sighted it and got it ready, his first shot was 1 1/2" high and 1" right. Think he was a bit surprised.

Some folks just can't seem to line up the barrel and the target at those distances so the 25 yard for first shot may be good then keep moving out. Have seen folks like you mentioned that will send countless rounds downrange and still can't get it where they want it.

There is a method to this madness that makes it all so much easier. Our last two guns we put together from first shot shooting thru our chrono getting it on at 100, doing the tracking test, shot a couple groups and then putting a couple rounds thru a 3/4" hole on a steel plate at 234 yards was less than 15 rounds for each gun and ready for a trip to our favorite 1000 yard range for settings.

On a proper benchrest, with the rifle bagged/supported snug, I've done one-round sight in at 100.

Bore sight, fire one round, look through scope and dial turrets to center reticle on the bullet hole.

More than one way to get it done.

This sounds like a good idea to me, makes perfect sense. I'm going try it tomorrow for my brand new SS 12x42. But of course, I'm an idiot

This works, if the rifle is 100% steady when you dial into the bullet hole and your scope tracks like it should

I don't think you do, when I bought my Remington 710(package deal) with Remington scope. The sales man said I was ready to hunt/shoot out the box. No sight in required, so whats this nonsense about 4 round sight in? You buy high end sh*t like my package and the mfg takes care of it.

Guilty as charged. I'm a idiot. Just sighted in my new Colt Competition AR. Bore sighted at 100, shot 1 round on paper, adjusted over 2 more rounds, then shot 5 rnds all under 1 moa. Not bad for a moron.

I'm an idiot too. Bore sight with a few rounds, no problems.

The real smart people are the ones blind shooting expecting their spotter to pick up on the fact that their rounds are hitting my target next to them. I kid you not. This has happened twice this year. I actually had to stop both of them and tell them how to bore sight the rifle. It helped one. The other scope was jacked up.

I'm such a moron that I did a 3-round bore sight with a buddy's Savage Palma rifle at 300 meters last winter. First shot was 10" high, second was centered, third was centered, done. I wish I would have known about this "pro" technique of taking a shot at every 25-yard increment and walked it out to 300m from there, probably would have been a better zero. Oh well, it was only about 13° outside and I already had a target up at 300 and didn't have all freaking day to waste anyways. I dont know why I fight it. Maybe next time I'll get it right.

add me to that list....AR sighted with 2 shots. look down the barrel adjust turrets, one shot of a few inches off bull. Measure with reticle, adjust turrets, next shot in the bull. Minor adjustment and fired 5 shot group to confirm.

Easiest and most efficient way......

I bore sight, and read the reticle, I don't have to use 3 different targets or anything stupid like 25, 50, then 100, I am on at 100 with the first shot then read the reticle and I am in the black with the very next shot.

I pride myself on being an idiot in this case.

I believe I am an idiot as well. However, my idiotic way of sighting usually takes two shots. One on paper, make the adjustment, and one for confirmation.

You're shooting way too many rounds for sight in...

When I am confident of the gear I am using, it takes a grand total of two shots to sight in (same thing as what Lowlight described above).

When I am testing something new, I do not base any decision on single shots. I tend to use three shot groups to see what the rifle/scope/mount is doing.

i get on sand bags or a vice, get in a solidposition with my rifle, fire, adjust reticle to impact point, fire again to confirm. usually does the trick...

what we hear a lot in our shop, "yeah man, i was holding real steady", or "i was shootin off the hood of the truck"

I do like MontanaMarine....

Boresight rifle
Fire 1 shot at center of a target at 100yards
Take and aim rifle back at center of target
Without moving rifle adjust reticle to bullet hole from your shot
Depending on how good the previous step is done you should be very very close to being zeroed.

You should fire 1 or 2 shots to confirm zero.


I did this yesterday, installed a laser on daughters XD 9mm.....

turned laser on
centered red dot at target at 7yds and fired a shot
put hand gun in a vise and center red dot back on target
adjust laser to bulet hole
done with one shot

shoot a few more rounds to confirm

Having the range go cold to move it multiple times and at my range I need to shoot into a berm and don't have one for high power at 25 or 50 yards.

If zeroing at 100, I boresight and let it rip.

Past 100 yards, I boresight, then dial the turret up the required amount for that range, and let it rip.

This idiot has been known to score hits in the 10 ring at 600 yards, first shot after boresighting.

What if you can't get on paper at 25 yards but you have a really solid 5-yard zero? Could I set up targets every 5 yards out to 100? Now that would be a good zero. For peace of mind, I'd probably walk it back from 100 down to 5 just to confirm all of that useful dope.

I think you might be the only one here that is not an "idiot". I just know if I went to the range and saw a guy shooting at 25 yards with a custom rifle I would be the one calling him an idiot. Do you measure your 5 shot groups at 25 yards as well?

I'm a massive fucking retard I reckon. While all the other operaters are at 4 yards zero'in their 338's I'm at 100 yards. I shoot one round into the berm at a mud clod so i can see impact, adjust reticle to impact, then shoot one on paper and a round later im zero'd, I never knew how big a fucking dipshit I was till now, I am gonna try this shoot a round at every 3 feet increment zero'in technique asap

How do you "boresight" an AR by looking thru the bore to the target....when the Upper & Lower has to be apart to see down the bore...?

Am I missing something here...?

When you look through bore and have the upper in a sturdy locked in position you can then verify & correct the scope.
If you got it place handguard of upper in bull bags or sandbags, You should have already pulled bolt from upper and lower can either be left on or off. Have a large sighter dot at 100 yds and center it in bore ... not touching rifle, see where scope is aligned. Or not. Making sure not to move upper (keep sighter centered in bore) make scope adjustments.

Yes, I realize you have to take the upper off, which is why I inquired. When I go to the range to help buddies sight in rifles, we usually just have either a bipod/front rest & rear sand bags....just figured it would be hard to hold the bore on target while removing lower to look through the bore & then putting it back.

But i guess if you have it locked in a rest, it would work...

Finally figured out how to use the Leupold Zero Point boresighter that came with the last Mk4. Not exact, but gets the first round within a couple of inches at 100 yds. Then read the reticle, correct and confirm.

Four shots is using way too much ammo.

Here's some advice. Enjoy your own shooting, and stop obsessing over what other folks are doing, as long as it's not something unsafe.

Jeez, all you've done is annoy the shit out of at least 30 people who were enjoying their range day until you rolled up on 'em.

Nobody likes "that guy" at the range.

i take off the upper, then have the front on the bipod and the back of the upper supported by bags. from there it is the same process....
