.40 cal

Do any of you reload .40cal ammo. I would like to start and was just wondering if i need anything special to reload for my glock.

I already reload for my rifle's so i have the press and stuff like that. If any of you do reload what is a good powder and bullet weight to start out with.

I use a Lee bulge buster to unGlock my brass, it works exactly like a Redding GRX but half the price, I have been loading 180grn pills in various brass with 4.0 TightGroup and CCI primers, speed is 830 out of my G35

I am a fan of VV340 with 165's and 180's loaded to what ever powerfactor I need at the time and longshot with 135's just for the fun of it (1400+fps).

I run a supported barrel in my G35 so no other equipment is necessary other than the standard carbide dies.

I use two different powders.

5.2 grains of WST or
5.2 grains of VV N320

180 gr Zero JHP

WSP or FSP primers

Load out to 1.170

Makes about 170 power factor out of my STI 5 inch.


Keep in mind that some powders are temp sensitive and will gain or lose FPS according to the outside temp. WST is reverse sensitive and gains FPS when it gets colder.

VV powders are pretty stable in most temps.

Just remember that Glocks have a polygonal barrel so I wouldn't recommend using lead bullets unless you are going to buy a barrel with riflings cut into it ($100 -$200). I have known of a few Glocks blow up because the owners were shooting lead. My understanding is that Glock will not warranty a gun that blows up from shooting lead.

That being said, I know that I will catch flack for saying that about lead. I have a couple of friends who still shoot lead thru a factory Glock barrel and have never had a problem... so there are probably a few on here that shoot lead also.

I do not have load data here but I have shot 155 and 180's. If you want, PM me and I will try and get you the info on the load I have shot but I am sure that several guys here will have their data handy. My personal thoughts on reloading for auto pistols is not to push them too hard, reload for practice and buy for carry.

I use E3, its clean and cheap, about the same burn rate as VV320
4.3 gr E3, 175 SWC, OAL is 1.147, I'm getting around a 169 power factor from a 5" STI

I shoot 165gr rounds-- I'm not going for distance, so the lighter rounds are fine.

I have loaded 1000's of these with 155-165-180 grain Berrys Bullets. I prefer the 165. Federal Primers, Win and RP brass. I use Unique, IMR 7625 and Clays. Trouble with the Clays when the ammo gets below 50 degrees. I run all the cases through a Redding GRX and they are great. I shoot a Sig X5
