Anyone know where I can locate one of these? I have heard that you can make them work but they need to be shimmed...? Any info would be helpful. Thank you!

The thin aluminum sides of a beer can make great shims and can be cut with a knife on scissors. Just a thought. I use brass shim stock from ENCO.com. They are cheap and shipping is fair. You can order a package of a bunch to thicknesses and then shim it like you need. Donald

Hummm, seems someone should either offer nicely cut shims and/or bases to fit these older receivers. I realize there aren't a whole lot of CMP 40Xs coming into the market now, but it's probably a few hundred.

SDWhirlwind, nice setup with the Redfield scope and I assume Leupold bases and rings and a big thanks for the info. and pic!

Thanks to SDW tipping us off about the change that was made to these receivers, and the current manufactured 700 bases being incorrect for these older 40X rifles built on 721 and early 700 receivers I was able to find a nice old set of Leupold bases marked 721. You can also order Weaver # 35 & 36 and they will be correct if I understand the Midway site for 721 bases. With 1200 more of these fine old rifles being shipped from CMP this will come up a lot. I would certainly be interested in offering bases for Remington 40X / 722 rifles. If anyone is willing to work with me on getting some reasonably accurate dimensions, it wouldn't be a problem to do a small run, or even just a few, as once the necessary dimensions are known and plugged into some macros, it's only a matter of minutes to change from making one base to another.

Unfortunately I'm not an FFL, so I wouldn't be able to receive your action. I can however send out a kit containing oven hardenable modeling clay in a tray that you can use to make an impression of the top of an action. After baking to hardening it, ship it back and I can get the measurements I need from that.

dlc356 - The bases would be the same price as our regular bases, $137.60 for stainless, and $193.60 for titanium.

I just had the opportunity to measure a very nice early 70's 40X-BR. Between that and some discussions over at the CMP forum, it looks as though there probably aren't any significant differences between the 40X and the Remington 700 actions. That isn't to say that some actions may need shimming, due to manufacturing tolerances, but there don't appear to be any systematic differences in rear bridge height.

These bases would be produced with engraving specifiying REM 40X, but otherwise would be the same as our current Remington 700 bases. I'm definately going to make them in 20 MOA, would there be any call for 25 or 30 MOA bases? (it's kind of pushing it for most centerfire guns, but with a rimfire, it might be worth it, depending on the scope.)

30MOA would be a good idea for a long range .22LR

It takes about 50 MOA of elevation to get a subsonic 40 grainer to 300 according to my Ballistic Program.

Not that my opinion means squat....but I agree 100% with SDWhirlwind's statement. I have seen it written other places and have seen it on my CMP 40x.

I used a 30moa, 2 piece bases on mine I bought from another member. It makes up for the slight difference plus I get some extra elevation out of the deal. I like the looks of a one piece rail better but this works for me and it is also slightly easier to load being a single shot.
No....I'm not saying it was HARD to load with a rail. Just saying it easier this way.

BTW, the rings are Burris Signature Zee Rings (using the 20moa inserts) and the scope is a Weaver Grand Slam 6-20x-40mm, fine cross hairs and dot.

thats what I thought. I am currently using Mk4 rings and mk4 one piece base on my cmp 40x. When the front screws are snug/tight, there is a small gap at the back. Approx 1/8th" or less. It is the same on my short action 700, but the gap is slightly less. Given the nature of the rings, they are made to grip the base one way, bending the scope tube is a real concern. Is the general thought that any gap is too much?

I just got a used Leupold base and rings for the Remington 700 short action (at least that's what I was told they are) and this is how it fit on my 40X non-B action. You can see the gap pretty good.

So I take it I just need the Leupold base that is for a 722 action and not the 700, correct? Since it was temporary anyway I just have the mount and scope with just the front 2 screws holding it in place and the rear floating.

I've been reading that the dimension difference between old/new 700 and 40X bridges (721/722 and early 700-based 40Xs, vice mounts for late 700 centerfire actions with letters in the serial number -- once upon a time I could tell you the transition year and the exact edition of <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">Precision Shooting</span></span> I saw it in my pre-cranky, old fart days) can be compensated for either by shimming or by using two-piece mounts and Burris Signature Zee rings with inserts.

Medium Zee rings are .180" from base of ring to bottom of scope tube, while the High rings are .300". If you used a medium in front and a high in the rear the .120" difference would mount your scope flat without having to shim. The Zee ring inserts will prevent the scope from being twisted, torqued, or sprung (bowed) and at the very least keep your scope from getting some pretty bad ring marks. They may give a slight forward slope effect for added elevation.

Medium (for front)

High ring (for rear)

Aesthetics and a one-piece base would lead me back to Mr. Murphy for a dedicated multi-slot with slope.

I'd say go with a one piece base and shim the rear so there is no gap or use the 2 piece rig like I have in the above post. Either way the Burris Zee Rings with plastic inserts will make your life easier in this case.

Being you already own a one piece base I would find some shim stock and shim the rear so it is even with the front and call it DONE. Just my .02

Wished that arrogant self absorbed dick who goes by MLHSR on CMP forums would read this. He called me a liar and accused me of spreading misinformation about this subject. He had "six 40-X,XB's and a bunch of early and late 700's and has NEVER had an issue with scope mounting"!!!! Claims all you need is Weaver 35 and 36 bases and Leupold Rifleman rings or Talley's or Seekins(can't remember which) and you won't have any issues. Seems Marty @ Badger, Wendall @ Outback Gunparts, Remington and myself don't know what we are talking about.

I was just trying to make all the buyers of the CMP 40-X's aware there may be alignment issues and to pay attention so as to NOT damage a scope tube in the process. .017 isn't alot but if you get a rear base speced to the max one way and a ring the same you could easily end up with enough difference to damage to a scope tube or at least induce enough stress that it may not track correctly or to its maximum travel.

I had to shim the rear of my XR .030 to correctly align a 2pc Leupold base set and rings. Dickwad MLHSR claimed by me putting it into an ADL stock I "stressed" the receiver of my "precision" 40-XR by changing stocks and that was the issue and NOT a change in manufacturing specs. Guess some people just know everything or cannot admit when they don't.

He wouldn't even state whether or not he had ever bothered to measure anything, just called me a liar for posting that the rear bridge had been changed. Also he stated that if you used bases marked for REMINGTON 700 ONLY and not those marked Remington, Weatherby Vanguard etc. I guess in his little mind he thinks Leupold, Weaver, Redfield etc make one set exclusively for the 700 and other sets to fit multiple receivers. LOL Told him to call Marty or even Remington but guess it better to not prove yourself wrong!

What I tried to also emphasize was that Leupold, Weaver, Redfield, Burris etc all make their bases for "current production" guns. If you can find an older base then you should not have problems but make sure and check. I took 2 new never installed Leupold 1pc bases and tried them on the last 40-X I bought. One had .016 clearance under rear of base and the other .024. This with both front screws tightened down. So it also showed just how much tolerance difference can be had in 2 identical Leupy bases.

Just make sure and check guys. Burris Signature rings are probably the easiest solution and by using different inserts you can raise the rear and drop the front to gain as much as .040 by doing both ends. Will add alot of elevation, especially using the 1/8 click scopes like the Nikon 6.5x20, B&L/Bushnell 6x24 etc.

Dennis thanks for confirming this once again, I have two early Remington 700's a 66 and a 67, and the only base that comes close to working without shims is this one, all others require shimming or I will torque the scope

Why not use bedding to make up the diff? even on my new Rem 700's when the front is tightened down the rear has a small gap. Just clean the bottom of the base, put some release agent on the receiver and bed it. No silly looking shims needed and on the 3 I have here its hardly noticeable on 2 of them.

Extreme, thanks for the tip on Murphy Precision. I just ordered a 20 MOA base for my newly purchased (old) 40X 22LR. I briefly mounted a NF NXS with Badger rings on the supplied weaver bases but ran out of elevation at 100 yards. I don't know the year of manufacture because of an extra letter in the barrel stamp, so I wasn't sure what route to take on selecting the correct bases.

Sinister is dead on with the info on the 1974 receiver bridge offset change from .117" to .100". I have Mr.Lacy's "Book of the 700" and that information is stated on page 37 along with a nice graphic.

Cameron informed me that he machines his base with a .114" offset because of so much variation between receivers. So, I should be GTG with his base whether my 40X is pre or post 1974.

I'll update with results after I get the bases. Cameron is very knowledgable and was a pleasure to deal with. Keep him in mind for your next Remington or Savage bases. If his machining is as great as his attitude, you'll be very pleased.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Update:</span> I received my 20 moa base from Cameron of Murphy Precision last weekend, got it mounted, and out to the range yesterday. Machining, Cerakote, and fit to action is perfection.

I have not bedded the base yet and won't until I have the metal Cerakoted. I dropped the 40X into a GAP Camo A-5. Below are a few pix of the rifle, the base, and a few targets. The ammo used was the cheap Federal Champion stuff. This was the same setup used with the Weaver bases which ran out of elevation and produced 4 to 5 inch groups at 100 yards. The ONLY change was removing the Weaver bases and installing the Murphy Precision 20 moa base. I will try the Gold Medal and Wolf Match next.

I have Ken Farrell 1 piece bases that work great on my 40xHB. They also sit a little higher so there is more room for your fingers as you single load.
