.416 Barrett/.408 Cheytac

Well after debating on building another long range gun and steppin up from my rem. 700p .338LM, I believe im gonna try out a .416 Barrett or a
.408 Cheytac. More than likely the .416 Barrett. Seems ammo is easier to come by. If I dont have any luck finding a setup I like then I will either build my 700 further(lookin for a stock/chassis system) or sell it and build a different .338LM. I have always wanted a Barrett 98B but I havent seen to many reviews on it.

As far as the .416 and .408, who is chambering these rounds besides the barrett and cheytac companies?

I just got an Edm 408. So far I think it is the best rifle I have ever owned and Bill the owner of EDM is a great guy to work with. I bought it used and I called him for some info and he was more than happy to answer all my ?s. he has some models right now that have slight tool marks that he has marked down. If you are going 416 I would look at the Mcmillon action. Can't go wrong there, also many people are fond of Lawton in Montana.

Factory ammo for both is a problem, but going from a Rem700, why not consider a .338LM instead?

My local dealer keeps a.dozen boxes of .416 on hand at all times. Same place I buy my .338 lapua from

We have shot both out to about 2500yds. There is not a lot of difference. 416 is faster but bullet has less BC. It comes down to which rifle you like better.

I like both rounds. Probably like the ballistics a little better on the .408...but im not sure who all puts out a rifle in both rounds yet. I like the cheytac m310 but seems noone has one and I know barret has the model 99 but I cant find a lot feedback on it. so im tryin to see who is buildin anything custom...

Both cartridges have moved out of wildcat territory and are more widely available. The .416B is a necked down .50BMG, so just about any rifle that's built around a .50BMG can be made in .416B. The same goes for .408CT and .375CT, requiring an action based on a .408 bolt.

Which is better? Hard to say, each has pros and cons. I like the .408 over the .416 for the simple fact that it doesn't requires such a large, heavy rifle to built it around. For the most part it's just a nudge up from a .338LM action, whereas a .50BMG is quite a leap up in scale.

Right now, .416B has an edge on availability of reloading components. There's a sudden shortage of .408 brass again, which wasn't the case from 2006-2010. Getting .50BMG brass to neck down isn't much of a problem and .416B original brass doesn't seem that scarce.

So if you want a bolt gun in either caliber, just about any custom shop that handles .50BMG rifles can probably make either for you.

The 416 brass is a more than just a 50BMG necked down. It is alot shorter also.

Right, but my point is it's based on a .50BMG case, so it doesn't require brass made to .416B spec. You can't do that with a .408 by just necking down and trimming a .505Gibbs case.

Thanks for the link. I hadnt seen that thread. Good thing I havent spent any $ with them.

Guess I need to dig some more and find someone else who is building a solid setup

Got an email from Lawton from the new owners telling me they were in the process of gettin everything setup for production and revamping the accounts and all and.said to be fully operational within a few months.

Who else is good to look at for a .408 and .416?

McMillan now builds a Tactical rifle chambered in 416 Barrett, saw it at the shot show.

I'd search the web and have a custom builder put something together for you for the amount of money you are going to spend. You cant go wrong with the barrett or the cheytac....they are some of the best (if not the best) long range production rifles in the world. The cheytac 416 system might be the best system out there with its ballistic computer system and kestrel weather computer.

You could have a custom smith build you a rifle or go with one of the above. Do you plan on shooting a mile plus? If not....338 Lapua will do you just find and there are no shortage of components or ammo choices.

I thought about building my .338 up a little further but I would really like a 408 or 416.

I thought about the Barrett model 99 in a .416 cuz I can.get a deal on one but I havent seen a lot of reviews on them as a production gun.

I would like the CheyTac M200 Intervention .408 system but its upwards of $15k. Im serious about shooting but with this unstable economy and me working for the government, its hard to spend that much $ when you dont know from one day to the next if your gonna have a job or not....

There is nothing really magical about the M200. You can have a nearly identical rifle for much less by getting an XM04 rifle then bipod/forend from RND. That system is overkill for that caliber, in my opinion. You can build a better, lighter and less expensive .408 (or better yet .375) using any one of the classic .408 actions (Stiller, Lawton, Barnard, etc).

I agree. Its a nice system but I would be hard pressed to give that kinda $ for it.

Im gonna look into some of those actions and see where that takes me.

I may end up doin a different stock/chassis system on my 700 while im in the process of lookin for the .408/.416 components...so many out there, I dont even know where to start

Try Dave Viers, he specializes in the Big Boomers and ELR rigs. He also makes the die's and supplies custom brass.

Or, just search the net for custom big bore rifles...a smith can build you a 408 or 416 for alot less than barret or cheytac will charge you. The glass on your rig is gonna be an ass kicker...anything less than somethng like an S&B PMII and you won't maximize the capability of the cartridge bc the target will be difficult to see clearly. Oh, and your going to want a can for sure. Thats another 1K+!

Sounds like a badass project though...good luck.

One person I would give a call to if you are considering rounds of this nature is Tom Sarver. He is on here from time to time but most of his time it seems is spent on his range with all the competitions he holds and lessons he gives.

I had several in depth conversations with him about cartridges in this range. He has experience with them all and if he has any questions he can test them out to well past a mile on his own facility. Not saying that almost any of these smiths on this site couldn't make you an excellent rifle but is you want to talk to someone with an in depth knowledge of this type of shooting and a ton of trigger time this is the guy to talk to.

The 408 reamer is listed on the PTG website, so wouldn't any custom builder work with the 408? I would be shocked if any of the major builders, including GAP and the others, said no.
