You are not dealing with the pressures you are with a .308
21K psi compared to 60K psi
Don't get me wrong it won't hurt to look and see if any defects are in the brass but as to prep it is size trim and shoot and trim only once

My pistol brass prep entails of throwing it in the tumbler and then throwing it in a Arco bin next to the Dillon.

Man, I have been trimming, chamfering, tumbling all my 45 acp brass. I just want to be precise, since I am new to reloading. Can't hurt I guess.

I had a buddy who went from placing around 10th to a consistent 2nd or third in IDPA matches after sorting brass by weight, doing the flash holes, and uniforming primer pockets. The processing got rid of his "just out side" the higher scoring area shots, and he was young and fast enough for it to make a difference. For most folks, it won't matter. You'll want to measure the case length and trim for safety reasons.

With that in mind, I don't know anyone who preps the primer pocket, flash hole, or trims handgun brass. It's just not necessary and in my humble opinion is just a waste of time, life's too short for me to spend hours on net sum zero.

I treat my match pistol brass like I treat my match rifle brass. But 90% on my pistol brass just gets run through.

That's all that needs to be done on handgun ammo IMO.

As far as your buddy, perhaps all the extra prep made him think the ammo was better and the better shooting was psychosomatic... I cloverleaf at 20' with my reloads

My buddy was losing points on the head shots and being just outside the A zone on the IDPA targets, especially the obscured ones; so they weren't just 8" targets. Could partly be a pysch job too, but he had the same problems in practice as well as the matches. Same results when I had him do blind tests with his range pickup reloads vs. prepped brass. One thing I noticed on his range pickup stuff was the case weights varied by as much as 12 grains.

Could partly be a pysch job too, but he had the same problems in practice as well as the matches. Same results when I had him do blind tests with his range pickup reloads vs. prepped brass. One thing I noticed on his range pickup stuff was the case weights varied by as much as 12 grains.

As per DocB's buddy, I a firm believer in the old saying the late Jim Clark (Sr.) had: If YOU think it's makes a difference, it probably does". Pistol competition is 90% mental, 50% physical. I have to go dry fire now.

My .45 no, but my .38SPL cases for my S&W M52 I pretty much have to...
Some day I will prep some .45 and some 10mm and some .38 Super and see if the 1 Gold Cup and 2 Bar-Sto barrels really care about it, they are IPSC guns so probably not much to be gained there..
The Smith '52 will show every flaw in your reloading <span style="font-weight: bold">and</span> shooting ability, love to shoot it but hate to screw up because like some of these folks rifles around here you get the " you screwed that shot up didn't ya " look... and you got no defense they know it and you know it,some guns just shoot that damn good....
I am of the belief that if I spent all this $$$ on a custom rig,..there is no excuse for crap reloading practices and bargain components, it kinda defeats the purpose of having all that talented gun building you just spent all that green on doesn't it...

There's a local bad ass wanna be that preps his 9mm brass ( primer pockets, flash holes, trims) better than I prep my match 6.5x47Lapua brass. He also shoots one cleans, etc on a new pistol be it a Glock 19 or Xd whatever. I took my range found brass, tumbled, then loaded on the Dillon 650 and shoot it in my G34 that hasn't been cleaned in 1000+ rounds, and side by side with mr wanna be I easily shoot groups half the size of mr wanna be's. And he shoots twice as much pistol as I do.
Brass prep on pistol ammo is a waste of time with zero return.
The exception would be some form of a single shot pistol.

IDPA targets don't have an "A" zone.
Gun games like IDPA are won and lost on time, not accuracy. Nobody, I don't care who you are, is fast enough to win and lose on points.
I don't need his email address. What you're talking about is absolute nonsense. Winning or losing in IDPA is based on being able to deliver accurate, or more correctly, somewhat accurate shots as fast as possible. No amount of mechanical accuracy will help you achieve that goal. Any combat pistol can do it. It's the indian, NOT the arrow.

I don't even know what IDPA is, but many years ago I did shoot at quite a few IPSC matches. I had fun but sucked when it came to score because I was slow. That was ok cuz it was fun. My consolation to myself was my accuracy was always near or at the top. One stage had three steps- 24 rounds- 45 yards. FUN- later when I got the sheet in the mail I was tied at the top for accuracy but the other guy did this almost EXACTLY twice as fast. This lead to overall 15th? place (for that stage)- He was master class and I was unranked. Big club, lotsa shooters...
I got to that accuracy by shooting many thousands of rounds- Many different kinds of brass, I think I cleaned a primer pocket once and maybe checked a case length but doubt that one.
Buy yourself a dillon case cleaner, dillon square deal. If finances are a problem then shoot lead- buy in bulk-1000/ 200 grain SWC- 5.7grains of 231(it been a decade so check the powder amount in a book, maybe my memory isn't working here.) Don't know today's pricing but that used to be a good way to shoot a thousand rounds for $60.
Many are overly worried about lead in the barrel- so shoot a jacketed round once in awhile.
If you don't want/can't go progressive reloading suggest getting a taper crimp die- roll crimp for .45 ammo isn't the best--

Lead is good. 230 LRN with 3.6-3.7 of Clays is my load. Makes major every time and nice and soft shooting. I don't waste my time sorting brass or trimming it. I shoot.
I'm a C class in single stack. Will probably take me another year to get to B.
