.458 socom rounds?

Re: .458 socom rounds?

it fits fine. You have to trim the front of the magazine. Hornady FTX bullets and the remington HPs are good buys. RL-7 or H110 both work well. H110 is messier.

Re: .458 socom rounds?

I use HK mags for my .458 and they'll hold 11 rounds, as opposed to 10 for a standard mag. If you modify Pmags, dedicate them to your .458. The modded Pmag may not hold the bolt open if you get rid of the lip up front(which will keep a hollow point from feeding if not removed). Best bet is a factory mag w/ magpul follower or an HK mag.

As far a bullet type/weight goes, for a GP round I bought bulk 300 grain JHPs that are backed up by H110. I also loaded 405 and 440 grain hard cast lead bullets and I couldn't really tell you what all I've got as far as bullets now but they range in weight from 250grn to 500grn. 440 is the heaviest I've loaded though. .458 SOCOM is a great round, but I wouldn't recommend it for a non-handloader....

Loaded rounds are available from SBR Ammuntion: http://www.sbrammunition.com/458sl.html

You have to modify the P-Mags to work with tipped bullet loads like the Barnes TAC-X 300gr, etc. by removing the ridge down the front/center of the mag. A total pain in the but...

I just use the 30rd Brownells and install the MagPul followers. I also properly ramp the mags fro better feeding with the widest veriety of .458 SOCOM rounds.

Re: .458 socom rounds?

Don't have the .458, but I do have a .50 Beo, and it will use some GI mags, most in fact, but the odd one may need trimming/filing. They have mags for these rounds, and I bet the .458 would work in them too. Only difference is wider feed lips and they have a different follower. But regular followers work and you can mod most mags by just fitting them and filing a bit on the feed lips. The ones that WILL NOT WORK are the kind that have ribs INSIDE the mag. For instance, I got two cheap 42rd. polymer mags. Promag. The mags are actually not all that bad for the price, but they have a rib that prevents the loading of any single stack rounds. So bear that in mind, that is at least one type that won't work at all.

Anyway, my reason for chiming in is to agree with Saito, if you aren't a handloader these calibres may not be of much use to you. Ammo is very expensive for these and rare as well, and not all that cheap truth be told to handload --and from my experience, the brass doesn't last as long either. At least in .50 Beo, it is a stiff one indeed.

.50 feeds fine, but I bet that .458 feeds a lot sweeter.

Big bore AR's are a real blast too! So much so I've damaged one of the older collapsible stocks. Plan on using a B5 collapsible later, sort of like the SOPMOD? Much tougher, better suited. Fixed stocks are actually recommended for many of these big bores and they feel a lot better with one, with a rifle length buffer, say an A1 stock.

Good luck!

Re: .458 socom rounds?

Like stated above the Pmags will not work without mods done to them. I reload a lot for mine and use the Hornady 325 grain FTX bullets behind H110 powder and get great results along with great accuracy. If you are looking for factory ammo, Corbon loads a 300 grain load that has been good in my gun accuracy wise.

Re: .458 socom rounds?

Regarding mags..
If you can find older P-mags (date code prior to 03/07) they will work without mods.
The lancer mags work, the sig mags work. The PRI 6.8 mags work and come with the front edge of the mag pre-beveled. I use usgi mags with a little dremel work on the front edge of the mag. Follower makes no difference, but the magpul ones are better than the green anti-tilts. The blue single shot follower is a waste of money, time, and mag capacity as the rounds feed just fine without it.
Regarding brass..
It lasts forever. Chamber pressure is around 35,000psi and I have one set of cases running on 13 reloads right now with no case mouth stretching, case head expansion, nothing.
