I'm considering investing in magnum / big bore muzzle break & a suppressor for a few projects ( 300 RUM / 300 NM with ELR in mind).

Over the last few years I've standardised all my muzzle thread to 5/8" 24 tpi.

But for large caliber, long heavy barrel ( 28" - 30" - 32" ?) I'm wondering if it is not too small? A 3/4" 24 tpi would have more meat?

I already have a 7/8" 24tpi on my 33XC, but options are limited in that size.

Any thoughts or experiences to share on this topic?

I'm going to 3/4" threads on all my comp guns that have straight taper barrels. Leaves more meat on a critical portion of the barrel. In theory, it should keep the muzzle temp closer to the rest of the barrel and reduce difference in expansion. Does it matter in practice? Probably not.

As far as it being too small, a lot of 30 cal barrels are threaded 5/8 and do just fine. I highly doubt 3/4 will give you issues.

Entirely depends on which suppressor you want to use - my next match barrel got threaded 3/4" because that's the only thread pitch I could find on an in-stock muzzle device.

If your barrel has the meat and you can find a compatible muzzle device, go for it.

If not, don't sweat it.

No problem using 5/8-24 on a magnum .30. Works perfectly. Used it for years on 300WM with brakes and suppressors. If you want to keep everything 5/8-24 then you will be fine.
