50 BMG reloading

I reload .416 Barrett; however, on the Hodgdon page they do list a minimum load and only list a 233 grain charge for a 750 gr Amax. I read some other info on 50 bmg discussions and those that are having issues with a wide velocity spread appear to narrow it down in the 30-40 range by increasing the charge. I use US869 and you might get better results from this as well. While 95 fps appears a little high, on a 750 gr bullet I don't think you will notice any real difference

Good to know. So the velocity spread becomes less important with higher bullet weights? Makes sense because I'm getting a 16" group at 1000yrds but its a paint stripe about 6" wide, With a 95fps spread on a lighter bullet it would be a 30" or 40" paint stripe.

Your load actually seems a little high to me from what I have seen others load Amax's to. I know a couple people that are loading less than 230gr's for 1,000 yd matches.

What are you doing for brass prep and what brass are you using? If you're getting a wide velocity spread, it has little to do with what weight charge you are using, but the consistency of your components. Are you weight sorting your bullets? I've had single digit SD 5 shot groups.

I am turning the neck, trimming to length and uniforming the primer pocket. It is lake city brass but I am weighing them and making lots out of them. I weighed a few bullets but they were so close I stopped, Got a 300 pack of all the same lot #. I should start doing that again. Anyone know where I can get a large lot of the hogden 50bmg powder? Im starting to wonder if there is something funky with my powder lot, its old.
