.50 BMG with 20 inches barrell

20" barrel you're looking at about 2200 fps or so with 700-750gr projectiles. 24" maybe 2400fps, 29" about 2500-2600, 36" you can push 2700fps. 45" you get full published velocity, 2900-3100fps.

It's still more than enough to get to a mile supersonic, and will still hit with way more energy than anything else, but it's very short for a 50bmg. You're going to be blowing a ton of unburned powder out of the muzzle.

I have the Barret M82CQ which is 20" barrel and it shoots the 690gr pills at 2440 ft/sec and goes subsonic at around 1500 yards at sea level. A buddy of mine has the standard M81A1 and my CQ is much more accurate. I think the harmonics of the shorter barrel is way better in this system with reciprocating barrel. This is pretty well accepted that the shorter CQ is more accurate, however it is down on velocity about ~200ft/sec. I have not reload the 750amax but i assume it should be around 2250ft/sec but even at that speed it goes subsonic at around 1900 yards which is way more than what i would ever need. The beauty is the 20" version is so much more easier to carry and maneuver and still delivers one hell of a punch.

I like the looks of the CQ model it is a mean looking little bastard! :) I have the model 99 29" tube fluted barrel, It shoots pretty well and packs a hell of a punch.

We shot with some 338 custom guns and 7 SAUM's that were more consistent than what I could get with my 50. I just built a 375 Cheytac to see if I can get a little more consistency out of my ELR rig. I had thought about selling my Barrett for awhile, but I would have sellers remorse as soon as I did, especially if swinestein and her chronies get their way. There is nothing like the concussion that occurs when you pull the trigger on the big fifties! :)

That's about what I was getting (2400-2450fps) with 750 Amax's out of my 24" AR-15 upper conversion before I sold it. That was with 225gr of H50bmg and it was supersonic to stupid ranges-- I was shooting it at about 5000ft elevation. I never pushed the 610-690 pull-down bullets to anywhere near max pressure. I had mild "plinking" loads with them that had them going 2300fps. I preferred lower velocity for the less accurate rounds, because I was just using them for destruction and fireworks anyways. Might as well not wreck my shoulder :)

Glad to hear you can get that kind of velocity out of a 20 incher, however, if I ever get back into the .50 game, it will be a single shot 30-36" rig, I think.

Deceased shooter George Petrusich who posts as GeoAz on the various 50bmg boards shot a Shorty as he called it and his posts should still be online.
His son inlaw owns Hamilton firearms in Arizona and used to sell all of George's stuff

There's a name I haven't heard in about 15 years.

I shoot an 18" .338LM and it kind of sucks too - for comparison.

Short magnums and big bore rifles have their place, but it's mostly on the two-way range.
