I am sure this has been beaten to death. I have been searching and reading for quite some time and can not find reviews for whay I am looking for.

I have a Celestron Ultima 65 spotting scope. My goal is to see .30 cal holes at 500 yards on orange peel type targets. I can see .223 holes at 400 yards but they are blurry.

I have a budget of $200 (thanks to my new can). I have my eye on 2 different scopes.
The Ultima 80 (up tp 60x and huge) and the Burris XTS-2575(75x and dig the size).

Does anyone have experience with any of these at 500 yards? It seems that even the higher quality scopes only go to 60x. Are 30 cal holes visible with 60x on higher quality scopes?

Will I be able to see a difference moving to one of these other scopes?

Thanks for your help.

Re: 500 yards spotter

I haven't had any experience with either of those, but I have used a few Leupolds, Bushnells, a Nikon I think, and the old Army issue M49. Keep in mind that with any optic, the higher the magnification, the worse the clarity. I doubt you will get the results in any "tactical" sized scope, especially for $200. By "orange peel" targets, do you mean those "shoot-n-see" targets that show orange where you hit them? If so, clarity might not bee that big of an issue.

Man, with magnification that high, I think you are gonna have trouble seeing any bullet holes due to mirage. I think you'd do better with maybe 50x and a HIGH quality body/eyepiece. Call Siebert optics

Re: 500 yards spotter

The orange sticker targets are fine for close in, but they are hard to see at distance. With my 22x NF scope, I can spot 6.5mm hits at 600 yards on white paper when conditions are right. I shoot at a small, black shoot-n-see on a large white construction print. This is the best back drop I have found to see bullet holes on paper. Any other colors, lines, or shapes you are shooting at make it harder to see bullet holes. So, if the spotting scope you are looking at is clear, then I think you should be able to see 308 holes.

The Shoot n see targets are great and I use the white backer as well out further

Re: 500 yards spotter

Returned the Celestron Ultima. Was not that clear. Just tested the Burris XTS at 500 with 30 cal holes. Very happy and much more clearer than the Ultima. It was also hotter with greater mirage.
