Hi guys,
Ive just worked out how to post pictures here, so I thought Id share a few pics of my .500Phantom that I built. It is on a trued Rem 700 long action, Pacnor 1 in 9" barrel, Wild Dog thumbhole stock and a brake that I made which is very similar to a Vais. It actually shoots very accurately, my subsonic load has no trouble hitting a 12" plate at 600yds. Id love to get hold of some Raufoss projectiles for it, but we are pretty restricted to what we can have here.
Is anyone else playing with similar rifles? [img:left]

Re: .500Phantom build

The Unimount is to get extra elevation, I have a 40MOA base and with the extra 20MOA in the unimount, I can dial in shots a lot furthur out without using the reticle to hold.
The .500Phantom originally started out life as the .500Jeffrey, cut down and the rim turned down. The brass I use however was made to spec by Horneber for Teppo Jutsu who developed the cartridge.
Its a neat little round, pigs certainly dont like being hit with 800+gr of lead!!

Re: .500Phantom build

Aussie .
i was thinking of something kinda similar,
but using the Lazzeroni .475 Lilmufu case and necking up to the .510 projectile.since i already have a remington chambered in the Patriot wich is the same basic case necked up.
Have you done any chrono work yet?

Re: .500Phantom build

I have chronoed a few loads, and my main load now is the 647gr FMJ at 1030ft/s using 25gr of AR2205 with federal large pistol primers. I have a mould that casts 975gr bullets that work well, but given the fast twist barrel, they leave too much lead in the barrel. 715gr Predator projectiles work well too. I had some 750AMAX'es that shot very nicely but still didnt expand at low velocity.
The Honeber brass was made for Teppo Jutsu, and as far as Im aware there isnt any left. I contacted Dieter Horneber and he is willing to make more, but it is pretty costly.

what is the total grain capacity for that case?
looks kinda short

Re: .500Phantom build

I had some of the LeHigh bullets, but we can no longer get ANYTHING .50cal out of the USA. I have had some similar bullets made here, but at $4AU per bullet, it gets pretty costly. I need to find some harder casting alloy, as I have another mold that is externally the same as the 975gr one, but with a cavity in the front that is 1/4" wide and 1 inch deep. If I can find an alloy that doesnt lead the barrel too badly, these should be awesome on game. I have a pic of one of the LeHigh bullets that we pulled out of a Sambar deer stag that was about 600-700pounds in weight, and it dropped him on the spot even at 900ft/s. When I find it I'll post the picture here.
The bolt face of the .500Phantom is the same as the WSM line of cartridges, it was designed so that it would feed and function through an AR10 platform.

Re: .500Phantom build

here is some pics of a LeHigh Subsonic bullet pulled from a deer. Hit front on in the chest, was found lodged under the skin just behind the ribs. The heart was destroyed and there was severe tissue damage. The deer didnt take a step. [img:left]

Re: .500Phantom build

Hi Andrew i hope you did not nail that sanbar here in Vic? their is a minimum case length of 2" to shoot them here i know a load of shit. case must be 2" projectile min 130gr and projectile diameter min .270 so you cant use sompthing like that but you can load a 30-30 with a 130gr projectile and black powder and all is fine. also the 264 win mag is not legal or any other 6.5 it is a load of crap. I have spoken with ken Melgard about his he likes it a lot and was thinking of making one but the case length is an issue in this state. I have some of the cases Bruce bertrum made based of the 500 Jefery they are 2.1" long and he was trying to get a 50 subsonic military/law enforcement round commerialised but it did not go anywhere so i might work on that.

Those Lehighs are awsome i have some here aswell if i was to use one that would be the best desighe. nice work on the rifle i like that camo style they look diferent.

Re: .500Phantom build

Range really depends on what you are shooting, but I can consistantly keep all shots on a 12" sqaure gong at 600yds. I havnt shot animals past 200yds, as its trajectory is way to curved, but if I had something stand still long enough for me to range it and make the appropriate adjustment, it would certainly be effective beyond that distance.
Wild Bill, that sambar was shot in SA

Re: .500Phantom build

I did not know you had them over there i have shot reds and fellow and some wapitti over there close to Robe parents have a house there. I wish that they would put a muzzle energy on the shooting it would be best all round. Nice rifle. I have a like new commercial 98 here i might have to build up the longer one but i prefer the phantom it is just awsome. i know that people have shot the 750gr A Max to 1000 yards with a lot of elevation and a mv of 1000fps they get there well as they dont loose bc very quickley.

another thing i have been thinking of is a 450 marlin with a fast twist then get some lehighs as he makes them in 458 aswell. it could be a good compromise.

Have you tried straight linotype and use allox in a lube sizer then tumble them in liquid allox after sizing for a seccond lube Andrew i have run some pretty hot 30 cal loads through 10 twist barrels at 2400fps this way and a gas check?

it is a little lighter in the finished product but might work for you i just gave the last 60kg to a mate over in adelaide. i also know of a guy in the US that will modify a mould for you to Hollow point and also have a blank to make it solid again if you want his details send me a message.

Also Geoff has some parts that are for pro shooters and law enforcement only that would fit that perfectly pm me i will elude to them you might be able to get a permit for one in SA under the buisness.

Re: .500Phantom build

Interesting project, cool looking rounds too!

I was just sitting here reading the last post and saw that folks were shooting to 1K with the 750amax, and I stopped for a second and thought to myself, how much power could that round really have at 1K when started at 1050fps. My jaw dropped when I saw the energy numbers. That round retains more energy past 900y than my .308 with 208 amax's at 2550fps! It still has over 1000ft/lbs of energy at 1800y!

Now if only I had a lot of disposable income!

that is why i am in the process of building one. subsonics are extremely efficient. the only thing that beats it at distance is a 50 bmg.
