Gunsmithing .510 whisper in progress now

Re: .510 whisper gunsmith

As you said, only SSK can cut you a "whisper" chamber.

Any gunsmith can make you the rifle if you hand them a chamber reamer and some die blanks. A reduced capacity 338 LM case setup to shoot 50 caliber pills is all you need, I would be willing to bet that PTG even has a print on file. If they don't (or can't release it for a reamer to be made) you can spec your own reamer from them.

i realize this, i guess more specifically what i am asking is, is there a gunsmith already set-up with the reamer and die blanks and all i do is send them my action and barrel blank and they send me back a barreled action. i called ssk and they said to barrel my action would be $900 and a set of dies was around $150-200. which seems reasonable, but my boltface needs to be opened up, and they said that they don't do that. i have a JONGMANS action and parts for that action are near impossible to get ahold of. thank you. steve

Why don't you just say "ship it to me"?

i have a left handed long action magnum boltface JONGMANS action laying around. the thing is built like a tank and i need something fun to do with it so i figured this would be the perfect caliber.

Re: .510 whisper gunsmith

so i have started my 510 whisper build. here is the progress so far. the bolt knob is off with USHANDGUNNER getting an oversized bolt knob installed. i am waiting on the barrel from the BRUX group buy. it will be an 18" 1-8 twist. the scope base is a 60 MOA custom made from murphy precision. the scope is a USO SN-9 3.8-22x58 bought from a fellow hide member. hoping to get to 1k with this rig. let me know what you think.

Re: .510 whisper gunsmith

I have just built a rifle with the same chamber dimensions as a .510Whisper. I'll post some pics of it tomorrow when I bring my camera in to work. Rem 700 long action with Sako extractor fitted, Pacnor 1 in 9" barrel, 18" long, Manners MCS-T4A, tac bolt knob made and fitted by me, Defensive Edge 3 port brake, PTG steel replacement trigger guard.
I have a .500Phantom myself, I posted some pics of it a while back in the Rifles section. Does exactly the same thing as the Whisper, just a different case.
I use 700gr Woodleigh VLD brass bullets and 25gr of AR2205 for 950ft/s and this load easily shoots MOA out to 600yds. We cant have suppressors here, but I imagie it would be quiet with that small amount of powder being burnt.

Re: .510 whisper gunsmith

I forgot to mention, I have a PTG reamer for boththe .510W and .500Phantom, but I guess its not much help to you. If you are really stuck, let me know and I'll send it over so you can get your chamber cut

i found a gunsmith that has the reamer that i need. thank you though.

Re: .510 whisper gunsmith

I wonder about a whisper round making a thousand yards. It would be a mortar shot. Shooting my subsonic .308 using a 220grain bullet at just over 1000fps gives me 150 yards pretty reliably at 1.5 moa accuracy. 200yards, not so much. I limit my hunting with it to 150 yards.

I am thinking with that base, a subsonic round can make it to 450, maybe 500 yards. It would take about 70moa elevation to get there with a 350 grain bullet at 1050fps.

why don't you run the numbers through BALLISTIC. 750 AMAX at 1050 fps with 3" scope height. takes 154.64 MOA of elevation. my scope has a total elevation of 300 MOA with a 60 MOA rail should give me about 56 MOA elevation left in my scope to spare. so elevation wise should be no problem whatsoever to get there.and with a 10 MPH full value wind, that same round drifts 51.67 MOA pretty darn efficient if you ask me. also at 1000 yards that round is still going 883 fps. which is only a 12% loss in velocity....run any supersonic round or your dumbed down 308 and see how much it loses. subsonics...especially heavy ones are extremely efficient.

Re: .510 whisper gunsmith

I'm working on a Desert Tactical SRS rifle barrel for the 12.7 X 48 so it appears there are a lot of guns in progress.....now who is cutting brass? I've got some hornady, privi, norma and lapua brass but need someone who can cut and neck turn it. The quarterbore site has been down and I lost the info I had from there....anyone else out there cutting brass.

As for reamers PTG has drawings in hand and is doing special orders for now. They might make up another run as well.
CH4D has dies or has them in progress. I got the last set from the last run but its been a few months and I don't know if the next run is out yet.
Thanks
Frank

i was working on the same idea but 500 thumper I was calling around and was going to have BWE in florida do it but ran out of money, Please let me know what you come up with

Re: .510 whisper gunsmith

Why did yall have to bring this to the top. I got my barrel over a month ago all I am lacking is a couple hours in front of the lathe. I recently found out I have 3 bulging disks in my neck and the doc took me off of shooting for a while, and standing at the lathe kills me. Man I am having withdrawals something terrible...gotta shoot or build something before I go nuts. I refuse to run my lathe under the influence of pain meds, probably would be okay, but better safe than sorry.

Re: .510 whisper gunsmith

Here is a pic of the SRS with the new 12.7 X 48 barrel installed. Still need to make the suppressor. Hope to have the can done in time to test fire on sunday. I only have 6 pieces of brass at the moment but thats enough to see how it works....

well i was going to buy a car but after seeing that i might just be biking it. I look forward to a range report. Have you tried the mags I though it was going to be a single shot only mag feed would be awesome. I thought about chopping up a mag to try and make it work. are those 3/4x24 threads
