5R OAL? 168/175SMK / Jumping?

Re: 5R OAL? 168/175SMK / Jumping?

SMK don't seem to mind the jump as much as some other brands / profiles. good luck getting anywhere near the lands and mag feeding with a factory Remington chamber.

Re: 5R OAL? 168/175SMK / Jumping?

I'm not worried at all about mag feeding, esp coming from a BR background, but most of my bolt guns are custom and using better barrels, like Hart, Lilja, and Krieger, which most of them like it just off the lands. I was just wondering what most LR shooters are loading these 2 bullets. Thanks for reply

Re: 5R OAL? 168/175SMK / Jumping?

It's true...SMKs love to jump. SMKs are jumping in my Rems .030-.065. Beautiful thing for folks that want to mag feed. I have tried many combos with seating closer, but the groups got worse. Sierra takes those things into account when developing. Love those SMKs.

Re: 5R OAL? 168/175SMK / Jumping?

My factory chamber of 700 XCR Compact Tactical 20" in .308 win was COAL = 2.860" for 168 SMK to just touch the land.

My load start at 2.840" due to .020" jump start point.

Re: 5R OAL? 168/175SMK / Jumping?

Jumping works great for me, I tried .050 over max book length on my 175's, then made test bullets shorter by .010 intervals, I ended up finding my best accuracy at the max book length.
Think of some of the most accurate factory ammo available, it is jumping and is within published specs.

Re: 5R OAL? 168/175SMK / Jumping?

With my 5R getting anywhere close to the lands barely left enough bullet in the case to get them to the range without spilling powder

I don't even bother with the amount of jump anymore. I get great performance with both 168 and 175/178 gr bullets (Nosler Custom Competition and Hornady A-Max) loaded at 2.800"-2.820". Can feed from the magazine and the accuracy is consistently in the .25 MOA realm. Rifle seems to care more about powder charge than OAL.

Re: 5R OAL? 168/175SMK / Jumping?

Thanks guys, I shot some more strings of factory 168SMKs and it's still shooting .1's ,and .2's. I have never had a firearm that shoots factory loads like this. I wish I knew what powder Federal Match uses, but I'm going to try Varget 1st.
Also the Brake test I did using Precision Armament, PWS, and JP Cooley, the PA had the least effect on POI, which didn't hurt groups at all, but POI was 1/4" high, but well worth the reduced recoil, and now I can shoot it "free recoil" like my 243's ,6br's, etc. Amazing Brake

I've read varying reports that they use RL-15 or IMR-4064.

Either one gives great results in .308 reloads for the 5R

I still prefer Varget for my 5R. Works great at all distances and temps.

yep, had a 2.963 oal (after adjusted for ogive) on my aac. Was kinda freaked out since the manual says 2.81 is max oal. I walked back by .02's on my smk's and found that the best players were 2.86 for me. That leaves like a .1 jump. crazy. but they like it anyway.
