My cousin is coming home from the navy on leave and is wanting to buy a rifle for some long range shooting. he has a budget of around 15-1700 bucks for rifle, optics, and a mount and rings. he wants to go with the remmy and is trying to decide between the 1k or more 5r or the cheaper sps and save some for better glass. i dont have much experience with the 700s considering i am a savage guy. any help or advise would be appreciated to make this decision easier.

For a Tad less than the 5R, the 700P should be considered. They have come up in price, but remain about 200 less than a 5R.
The 700P has a FAR better trigger than the SPS and the 5R, comes in a good HS precision stock that does not need replaced.

A 5r just came up, on the "sale board". I've got one, and love it. Less than 100 rnds., he says. Base included. Maybe you can "deal", for the rings? 1k. Put a Nikon Monarch on it, and go shoot. The 8-32s come with the "target turrets", for app. 700. That's what i put on mine. Good Luck.

the total plan is buy a starter rifle. and then he will be going back to hawaii in a few weeks and he will be leaving the rifle with me. down the road a few months he wants to drop it in an xlr chassis and put a break on it and whatever else i can think of to add to it. so pretty much i will have a funded build on my hands for the most part. in the end it should be a pretty decent rig its just taking that first step on the initial purchase and for some reason this cousin of mine in the military agrees with everything i say on this buy/build. haha

I'd look at the Rem 700 AAC-SD for about $600-700. I'd spend the rest on glass. He can get a good deal on a Leupold Mark 4 M5 being that he's military. I'd take whatever was left over and buy a bipod, perhaps an H-S Precision take-off, and quality base/rings.

Me personally I would go 5R good factory stock and great barreled action 1:11.25 twist is very hard to beat not to mention 5R riffling and spend the rest on base,rings,scope and ammo. One more thing that is a very good start to a custom build for the future of course. Hahahahaha welcome to the addiction.

I bought an SPS Varmint/Tactical as a starter rifle. The stock is gawd awful, so I bought a used Bell & Carlson for under $200. Put a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x scope on it (which I LOVE - great value) and a Harris bipod, and I've got a nice shooting gun for a tad over $1700.
I'm still using the stock X-mark Pro trigger, cuz frankly, I think it works great on my gun. Maybe I just got lucky.
I bought an SPS Varmint/Tactical as a starter rifle. The stock is gawd awful, so I bought a used Bell & Carlson for under $200. Put a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x scope on it (which I LOVE - great value) and a Harris bipod, and I've got a nice shooting gun for a tad over $1700.
I'm still using the stock X-mark Pro trigger, cuz frankly, I think it works great on my gun. Maybe I just got lucky.

5R! I have several of both in many different cal. and I will say that Remington spends a little extra time on their 5R rifles. They are hard to outshoot even with custom rifles. It comes down to the shooter. I used the 24" and the 20" with a break to win three matches against guys with full customs. I have 5 5r rifles and everyone has been a shooter straight out of the box. Luck? Either way, I am impressed. And I have several custom rifles with kreiger bartlein and Rock barrels. I know everyone's rifle on the internet shoots sub 1/2 moa lol but these really do!

Since you said the plan is to replace the stock I would go with the SAC-AD. Ive seen them in the $650 range which leaves enough in your budget for decent glass. Whatever you do don't go cheap on the optics to get a "better" rifle.

I have both,but I shoot my 5r. I just love the looks and feel of the rifle. The 5r has a smoother running bolt than the sps and mine groups a little better.

Has he entertained the AAC-SD? It's price range is in between the 5R and the SPS. I'm not going to drown you in the specs because they are out there, almost everywhere. If you were leaning towards the SPS, I would suggest bumping up to the AAC-SD, you would just need to replace the stock.

Is he stuck on a remmy? If you look in buds guns at the savage it's listed as 19055. This is a 24" 5r rifle accustock and trigger. Got mine for $744. And put a vortex pst 6-24x50 on it. Shots pinholes.

Just food for thought, not all 700P/PSS/LTR rifles come with the same triggers. Some come with the later X-Mark and some have 40X triggers or buy and earlier rifle with the older std Remmington trigger.
The 308win 20" & 24" 5R offerings are a good for all the above mentioned reasons. They all seem to shoot well, the twist rate is maybe a bit more favored over the 1-12" P/PSS/LTR 308 rifles, the stocks are decent and for some people the stainless is good to keep away corrosion or chances of rust.
I had an SPS-T 308 set up for my wife before, bedded it in a McM HGT and it shot very good for a factory 700R. I'm going to pick up another one or an AAC-SD just to have on hand for a future project as the price is right, they typically all shoot well out of the box and there's an endless amount of stock/chassis options available in a large price range.

o trust me i considered it i just didnt have the funds on me at the moment and by the time i got home from my match that weekend it was sold.

I also have a lot of time behind 5R's and they have all been shooters too, but not appreciably better than the sps tacticals, once you restock them.

Don't forget you can sell the stock I meant the SPS V stock aint worth much but I sold mine for a quick 60 plus shipping in about 3 minutes on evil bay and it funded my bolt knob job. You may also want to check out the budget build on 8541 Tactical It's your price range Watch all the videos first it will show you a trick about buying your stock if your looking to do a DBM later on.
