I have a 6.5-06. Have dialed in a load of H-1000 with a 150 SMK moving at 3000 FPS.
my question is has anyone deer or hog hunted with 150 SMKs at around that velocity? If so what have been results.? I know what the box and Sierra-says about using those for hunting but the hornaday
eld-xs shot horribly out of my rifle while the Berger’s and Sierra shot wonderfully (surprise surprise).
I’m also not sure about using Berger’s as a hunting bullet as they’re designed to come apart and not stay togethet retaining it’s energy. My distance for hunting would be no more than 300 yds max. I’m done with hornadays as I’ve never been able to get them to shoot worth a damn compared to Berger’s and sierras
Y’alls thoughts

I've seen wasted meat from high velocity impacts with thin jacketed bullets. My old man left an antelope in my backyard he shot with 7mm Rem Mag. I had to throw away a whole shoulder that was like Jello. Bigger heavier slower bullets can put anything down and leave the meat intact.

Go Berger hunting, slow down the ELDX to 27-2800, or shoot a pro hunter instead of SMK. You can also change up to Norma 204 and 140s which was Walt's 6.5-06 load or go with 4831SC to try and tune the Hornadys.

What do you mean Bergers are designed to come apart? You do know they have a VLD hunting line of bullets aside from the VLD target right? I would check those out...

I’ve talked to the Berger Tech reps on the phone and they told me the VLD hunting bullets are designed to “EXPLODE” inside the animal.
I’ve also recovered bullets from deer and hog where the bullets we’re in pieces. Berger’s work, and they’re very accurate I was just thinking from conversations with people I’ve talked to that hunting billets should retain their mass for better energy transfer.

yes H4831SC is a great powder and have used before. Will use it when-my H-1000 runs out

Oh gotcha, I did not know previously if you were talking about their target bullets. But it seems you were referring to the hunting line of bullets.

In that case, if you really want something that will retain mass and energy, look into Barnes bullets. Their bullets are designed to open up pedals and expand while maintaining together. If you're seriously looking for the best of the best HUNTING bullets, they should work.

I also heard Hornady has a 140 grain weight GMX but I'm not sure if you'll want to give it a try.
