Range Report 6.5 Creedmoor @ 1000 yards. ( let's compare)

Shooting today with a 4o'clock wind 10-15mph, I had my elevation @ 8.8 mils.
I figured I'd be closer to 8 mils. I've not chronoed these rounds, but they are 140g AMAX out of a 25 inch barrel.

I'll be shooting my 6.5CM on Saturday for the first time to zero it and on Sunday I'll shoot it out to 1000+. It's got a 26" barrel and I'll be shooting the same ammo as you.

I'll let you know what I dial.

DA was 3.5k 85 degrees and 51 % humidity .

With a DA around 2k at the NTRP match a couple of weekends ago I was 7.7 mils with factory 140 AMAX bullets running 2845 (previously chronoed with about 100 rounds down the tube). I worked backwards on JBM and that is somewhere in the 2890 area with a Krieger 28". I will be chronoing some handloads this weekend so I will send a few factory downrange and let you know.

Might expect a little gain in speed when the barrel gets "broken in".
At 2.5k my dope @ 1k was 8.4 mils with 140 factory ammo out of a krieger 8.5 26".

I think you will end up closer to the 8.8 mark. I have a 25" 6.5 creed chronoed at 2725fps with the 140g amax. With a DA of 8400 I was at 8mils. Dallas is closer to 2K DA??? 8.8-9 sounds about right for my rifle at that...

I have 81 down it now. I'll have to see if anything changes when I go back out.

I'm running a 25" hart w/ a 8.5 twist. If it's accurate I"m happy, I'm just hoping my numbers will be consistent.

Ours are pretty close. Mines a 25" obermeyer 8.4 twist. Im really happy with the creedmoor so far!

At about 3k DA my 6.5 CM is getting out to 1k yards with 28 MOA of elevation. I'm using a Rock Creek 5R 1-8" twist 27", load is 41.6 H4350 with a 139 Scenar average velocity is 2,860 fps

140 Amax @ 2690fps from a 22" barrel (relatively soft load at 51ksi)

31.25 MOA @ 1000yd; 1250' DA

31.25 MOA = 9.11 mil

Thanks guys, I'm just going to get out and chrono these rounds next time I get a chance. I have close to 80 rounds down it, I went ahead and cleaned it last night. Really I had no copper fouling. Once I get some numbers on this lot I'll post back in this thread.

8.3 mils, hmmmm. What is your density altitude and what BC and software are you using, or is this actual shot data.

With a density altitude of 7400 and shooting the 140 a-max bullet at 2860, I dial 7.6 mils for 1000 yards

I chrono again and I am shooting the factory 140 amax at 2k da around 2900. That matches up with my 1k dope on FTE and my real world dope.

Interesting didn't think I would get anywhere close to 2900 from factory ammo.

Did you actually chrono those factory loads at 2900? That's very fast for factory ammo. Never found it faster than 2830fps from a 28" barrel. What chrono and how far was it from the muzzle?

Crap, I've been averaging 2860 over my F1 Chrony, and I have recently been thinking that it is reporting high. With Rob saying he hasn't seen anything faster then 2830fps from a 28" barrel and I'm shooting a new 26" barrel, I guess that means it's time to get an Oehler chronograph.

Rob its a ced2 at 15' from muzzle. Its a Surgeon Scalpel 6.5, 8.5 twist tightbore at 26". I went back and input the velocity into FTE and it perfectly matched my 1k dope from the NTRP match a couple of weekends ago at 7.7 mils.

For a frame of reference, 43 grains of H4350 with the 140 is giving me 2815, so I don't know what is going on with the factory lot I have.

Hmm maybe they bumped up the powder charge some or it's the tight bore that's boosting the velocity some.

I've been meaning to do a 10 shot string through the chrono. Throw out the highest and lowest then average the remaing 8. The new barrel has a few hundred rounds down it.

Hmm interesting, I know H4350 varies lot to lot, sometimes significantly. When I put put ran some handloads of H4350 through it, 43 grains gave me 2815. Maybe I just got some rounds from a real hot H4350 lot.

That is actual shooting data. When I recorded that I was shooting at 700 ft above sea level, 78% humidity, and it was 92 degrees out. When I use ballistic software I use Ballistic FTE.
I use the drag 7 model which puts the Ballistic Coefficiency of the Scenar at .290 which I feel is more accurate. I like to use the Ballistic software to get me in the ballpark after that I lean towards real world data. I don't like to depend on computer programs and technology. I like to use good old fashion math and historical data. Call me old school but i feel it keeps me more proficient as a marksman. I hope this helps.

First of all congratulations on your performance. Ley me be clear because I sense that you took offense to my computer program comment. I do not believe there is anything wrong with utilizing a ballistic program. Like I said I use them from time to time. I was merely stating that I prefer to utilize a more old school method that I believe makes "me" a better shooter.
I also know all to well that when the environment changes that it will effect the external ballistics of the round fired. Believe it or not you can still take environmental parameters into effect without utilizing a ballistic program. Precision shooters and Snipers were doing it along time before the ballistic program came along. I personally do not like to count on anything that runs on batteries to get the job done if I don't have to. The business I am in if you depend on something other than your brain and it fails, Well you or worse someone close to you might pay the price for that. That in a nutshell is why I prefer to depend on the old school methods that rely on formulas and hard data. I train that way to strengthen and stay proficient in the art that I was taught 14 years ago in the Marine Corps.
I'll tell you I am really tired of the way some of the members of this site choose to jump on the littlest disagreement that they might have with someones opinion or post. Especially when they obviously have no Idea who they are disagreeing with or the level of experience that they are dealing with.I see it happening more and more. So quick to show others how knowledgeable and experienced they are. It happens often enough to me that I do not post all that much because of it. Anyways I meant no disrespect.

I loaded 40 rounds @ 41.5 today. I just want to see how it compares to the factory lot I've been shooting.

I believe what the box says is to start loading H4350 at 41.5 grains when trying to duplicate the factory load.

Went again today. 2000 DA and 8.9 mils to 1010 yards.

My reloads of 41.5 were at 8.5 mils.


Shot with a buddy who has a Surgeon 6.5 creedmoor and he was 8.2 @ 1010 yards.


As of now my rifle only has 150 rounds down it. I'll update it again when I get some more rounds down range.

Ballistic FTE runs within a tenth or two to real world with the Litz G7 BC.

I've now shot two different lots of the 140 Amax Horandy factory match ammo across my chrono. One lot has averaged 2860 and another lot averaged 2790.

The actual shot data seems to support these velocities.

What BC are people using to get these numbers? I've seen two popular BC values for the 140gr A-Max, 0.55 and 0.585.

When I compare FTE to my actual shot data, FTE is under predicting drop by 0.3-0.4 mils at 1k yards.

0.55 BC, 1.85 sightheight, 6180DA, 2860 fps = 7.6mils, right?

.585 is the Litz determined BC, which has tracked within .1 mil for me out to 1000 yards

Sorry to bring this post back, but I wanna ask you guys, since you guys shoot 6.5 creedmoor. I was just wondering, can a factory DPMS 24" 1X8.5 twist shoot 1,000 yards with handloads of 6.5mm 140 GR HPBT MATCH bullets with 41.5g of H-4350. I don't know the bullet speed. Has anyone try that already? Is it accurate? I wanna buy a DPMS in 6.5 creedmoor and hoping to shoot targets no more than 1000 yards. Maybe coyotes.

delta, should work just fine - your speed will in the zone of 2740-2775.

Load is 140amax, 42.9 of 4350, 210m at 2.810
2870 fps

7.9 mil to 1k.
