I just got my 6.5 Creedmoor M40A3(ish) rifle back from Short Action Customs and it is awesome.
The specs are:
Surgeon action
Krieger heavy varmint contour
McMillan A4 with EFR (purchased from a hide member)
Badger bottom metal and rings
NF FF1 with zero stop 3-15x50
CG trigger
Mark from Short Action Customs went WAY above and beyond in this build and I would like to thank him personally. As it turns out the HV contour is too thick for the EFR and Mark had to recontour the barrel from where the EFR starts at the muzzle just to make it fit. I was a little concerned because I know that Krieger barrels are completely stress relieved; I thought the recontouring might have induced some stress in the barrel and cause erratic shots when the barrel heated up from sustained firing. Most of my shooting (because of location and time) is at a couple of local F-class matches (humbling because I have to compete in the open class...every now and then I get the better of some of the open guys...). In the F-class match I tend to shoot as fast as the target puller is willing to work; routinely firing 20 rounds for record and a variable number of sighting shots in about 15min. What I did today after the barrel break-in was to fire about 12 rounds in less than 10min and THEN shoot a group...to see the effect of a hot barrel.
Below is a five shot sub dime sized group fired after the barrel was uncomfortable to touch...I could've done better with the group I think if I had a target with a more defined aiming point and I wasn't being rushed (public range in LA, CA). Most of the afore mentioned 12 rounds are part of the group at twelve o'clock..I have no idea what the hole is off to the left.
On this photo I took out the "white noise" created by the shoot-n-see by peeling the underlying range provided target off the back. i hope this better illustrates the capabilities of Mark's work.
Short moral of a long story: The rifle shoot awesomely and I had no reason to be concerned about the recontouring of the barrel....Mark is a pro and knows his stuff!
If anyone has any questions please let me know...I have another 6.5 Creedmoor built by Alan Warner and that is also a tack driver, the only difference between that rifle and this one is that it's in an AIAX and has a Lilja barrel that I had leftover from another build (both barrels were cut with the same reamer). The load used for this 42.5gr H4350 and 140gr Sierra Match Kings.
