I've been toying with the idea of building a 6.5 Creedmoor for some time. What I needed was a good donor Rem 700 action. I thought about a custom action, but the upfront price always deterred me. And good Remington 700 donors are getting harder to find on the cheap, and I even considered a new Rem 700 SPS, which go for around $550. and mostly throwing much of the pieces away.

Well I found a Remington 700 VS in 22-250 E series serial number, on Auction Arms. It's got the heavy 26" Varmint barrel, H-S Precision Black with gray spider web Stock, and the original old style Remington trigger, in like new condition. I bid on it, and it closed 30 minutes ago, with me the sole bidder, for a grand total of $550 shipped........

I figure, I can sell the H-S stock; the trigger;the bottom metal, mag box and floorplate combo, barrel & recoil lug, and have my donor action for less than $250. net total layout... I'm pumped.......

Now all I have to figure out is how and what parts to build it out?

    My current thinking is:

    1) 24" Barrel either Rem Varmint or Medium Palma contour, fluted w/1-8 twist. Perhaps I could have Hart Barrels do that work, chamber and true the action. And perhaps a Holland Recoil Lug...

    2) Manners T-3 or maybe a ambi. Manners GAT Stock.

    3) Timney Trigger

    4) Seekins DBM if only for the extra mag length available

    5) Seekins SRS Rail on front, and single stud rear.

    6) Seekins 20 MOA base and rings to match whatever scope gets the nod.

    7) Glass unknown, but waiting for the new Vortex Viper FFP's Mil/Mils to come out and evaluate. Or if I feel flush in the next few months perhaps a NF F-1.

Shoot any thoughts or ideas, as I'm open to suggestions as I'm starting with a clean slate, except for the action.

    Thanks,

    Bob

I'd suggest a pair of flushcups on the left side (assuming RH), and make sure the foreend rail has a provision for a FC (Accushot 37 IIRC). While I really like Seekins stuff, I am a HUGE fan of the Surgeon BM. If you remove the plate in an AICS, I believe you'll have more mag room than you will ever need with a 139 or 142.

Looks like you have it pretty well thought out. Not alot of pieces to a bolt gun but picking the right stuff the first time out is a good idea.

Here's a look at the T3 and NF F1 on my GAP built rifle with 28" MTU profile Kreiger barrel.

cool, I have one on the way also, it looks like Reloader 17 is where it is at for this laod also, atleast for JRose...believe he is running 26" and getting 2900+ FPS w/ coated 139 Scenar

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Project just got a good start....

Don't count H4350 out and it's very temp insensitive if you change area like I do. I would give up a fe fps to get more consistent velocities. That said I was getting 2870fps with np pressure from my 140 AMAX.

I mean, a NF in hand is practically as good as cash anyhow. I've heard very good very strong things about the F1 as an absolute alpha optic and gunsite</span>

Bob, sounds like you are headed in a very good direction. May I suggest Short Action customs for the work?

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Project just got a good start....

    Rob1 and Hunter,

Thank you for your comments: A couple of follow up questions....

First barrel length: I understand the velocity gains from 26" barrels. I am a short barrel fan, and 24" is a very long barrel for me, but I'll certainly consider it.

Rob what contour are you using?

    Really like the Manners T-3....

Second, If you have no trouble with Badger DBM and the AICS mag length, then that's a better choice for me, as ten rounders are available for comps.

Hunter thanks for the rec. on Short Action Customs, I'll look them up.

Scopes are still open. The NF F1 is first choice, but I still want to peep at the new Vortex's. Hell I'm cheap, but I do like the NF F1..... Of course I have SH Edition Gen 4 IOR 3-18 FFP Mil/MIL on my LTR 308, and if it continues to hold up well, I might just go with a matching pair. Plenty of good to excellent FFP MIL/MIL choices coming down the pike.

But I have time for that. Barrel and stock, plus parts first.

    Thanks to all,

    Bob

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Project just got a good start....

I'm running a 25 inch tube on my 6.5CM and with RL 17 I'm getting 2850 with no pressure at all. Go with the Badger DBM, I'm running an AICS and have no issues with length or feeding.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Project just got a good start....

Bob, I am using a 28" Kreiger MTU profile which is a heavy profile and I have no problems swinging it around at sniper matches. If you want to go 24" then go for it but don't go any shorter especially if you plan on using any factory ammo. If you are reloading then you can drop the length down and load up the pressure to get more velocity just like on any 6.5 round. I would recommend Kreiger or Bartlein also. Excellent cut rifled barrels.

The T3 is a very nice stock. For me, who doesn't care for the vertical grips of the A series and likes the HTG alot, it gives me the rear of the HTG with a higher comb but the wider A5 style forend for more stability when shooting off objects. I liked it do much my 300WM that GAP is building for me now is getting one put on it.

I believe Glen is in the process of making bottom metal that accepts AI mags. Not sure of the lead time on it though but get ahold of him and ask. I like having the option of 10 rounders and the AI mags work well. Badger does work flawlessly for me though.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Project just got a good start....

    Rob,

Thank you very much. Just went to Kreiger Barrels web site, and it appears they will do all I need done. Jury's still out on barrel length, and contour, but I will give it some thought.

    Thanks again,

    Bob
