I'll have my custom 6.5 Creedmoor in next week. It was built by Mark at SAC. The barrel is a Bartlein M40 1/8 twist 24". I'm looking to shoot the factory Hornady AMAX 140s initially, until I start reloading. It seems like the 140s are preferred in most cases for the 6.5 CM. For you 6.5 CM owners, what's your thoughts/recommendations? Also, I'd like to start using my Ballistic FTE phone app, but should I chrono my rifle first or just use the factory muzzle velocity of 2710 fps? Thanks gents.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Qs

I use shooter for the iPhone. IMO it's a steal at $10. Easier to use as well.

I love the factory 140s. My MV matches around the 2800 mark. 10 mils at 1100 yards. 0-1000 DA.

I've also been able to pull a nice .3 MOA from the factory loads. Sometimes I'll get a lil vertical, but not often.

It's a trued 700 w/ a hart 8.5 twist HV BBL

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Qs

Thanks for the info. Dieselgeek, nice rifle. I just downloaded the Shooter app as well. I'll take a look at it. It sounds like I'll definitely have to chrono it if it hasn't been done already. I'll post pics when I get the rifle. Barrel is as previously stated with Defiance Alpha 11 action, AICS 2.0, ARC rings, Vortex Razor HD (mil/mil) scope. I need to get my hands on a chrono.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Qs

If you don't have a Chrono, the shooter app has a MV tool. You tell it what you're hitting at and it will tell you what your MV is. My rifle started out around 2725, and is now in the 2800 range.

I'm REAL flat compared to my buddy w/ a similar setup out to 6-700 yards. Then we just even back up. It's strange.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Qs

It sounds like we probably have very similar rifles. Mark built my 6.5CM too. It's a HAMMER! You'll love it. Mark's a helluva nice guy and builds a fine rifle.

I ran the factory 140s for a bit as well. Like 18 of them

First trip out it shot 1/4-1/3 MOA. It was a little slow at 2675 out of my tube. I switched over to the 139 scenars but after shooting 1k of those (rifle still hammers) I switched over to the 142 SMKs.

A chrono is a very good investment. As other mentioned you can 'back into it' but spending some cash on a Chrono is a great thing IMHO. I have the CED M2 with the infrared shields. Great investment.

Oh - I use a Hornady FL die and a Redding seater. It produces ammo with about 1 and sometimes 2 thou of runout. Unless Mark has changed his reamer, I'd absolutely go with that Hornady die.

Edit: I use the Shooter app on my iPhone. It's great and has some solid numbers. It's a piece of cake to use. Highly recommend that as well.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Qs

I'm tinkering with the Shooter app as we speak. It's definitely less complicated than the Ballistics app. dvdt, I'm glad to hear that about the rifle. I'm dying to go shoot mine. Hopefully the weather will cooperate next weekend. I hope to get this thing chrono'd at some point. I'm not set to reload, but hope to be sometime this year. Thanks for everyone's input.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Qs

I have about 500 rounds through the 6.5 Creedmoor now. I have not used much factory ammo. When you do reload try using the 142 SMK Molly with 42 grains of RL-17. Should be around 2800 FPS. I can load up to 3050 with 46 grains but I decided to be a bit nicer to my barrel. Hope that helps.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Qs

Chrono to get velocity. Another option is to shoot a target at 500 yards or so, and back calculate your velocity.

I've always just loaded the Hornady factory recipe with good accuracy and consistency.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor Qs

I got the rifle in. Here's a pic. Yep I'm a lefty. The bipod was late arriving but is en route. It's the AICS spigot type. I also ordered a chrono. I went with the Shooting Chrony F1. I think it will suit my needs.

I think it is the Alpha II.
