6.5 Creedmoor- Updated 550yds

why this round has such a following.

I finally found the time to thread/chamber/crown my 6.5 barrel blank.

Specs:

trued 700 sa with PTG bolt body and Holland handle

1 in 8.5 twist Brux Rem Varmint contour crowned at 26 inches

Manners t4 with Surgeon bottom metal

Vortex Viper PST sfp moa

...and the results from my first trip to the range. Groups (5 shot) were fired at 100yds, prone with an Atlas and a squeeze bag at the rear.

Upper left is 41.5 grains of H 4350. Lower left is 42. Upper right is 42.5. Lower right 43.

CCI primers and 30 thou jump

This is a mild load for sure, but it will fill my needs perfectly. Steel out to 600 and the occasional coyote. Barrel and brass life should be excellent and recoil isn't even worth mentioning.

Why did it take me so long to try the Creedmoor?

Not trying to take anything away from the Creedmore; I'm sure it's a fine round. But I'd say your target has more to do with the rifle and the shooter than the cartridge. Ammo matters too. Good shootin'. Glad you're happy with the rifle. Sounds like some time and $ went into it.

That is a mild one, these 6.5's (Creedmore, 260 x47) seem to not mind being run hot. Steel out to 6 will get boring quick unless your shooting at MOA or less targets.

The 260 I got didn't show pressure signs until 46 gr w/ 139's
settled on 44.6 of 4350. I bet your still pushing it around 27-2800. Your barrel will definitely last longer, but these rounds can handle the pressure and consistently too.

just out of curiosity, could you walk us through the chamberin? Sweet rifle man, you're definitely gonna enjoy it.

The one we recently built (6.5 Creedmore) is running 2850 from a 26" barrel with Reloader 17 and a 140gr VLD. The gun shoots great and I know you will have a great time with yours.

Try a BN coated 140gr berger Hybrid that has been thru the pointing process. Mine hits 2800 in a 25" barrel. It's a badass round for sure!

The 140 A-max with with 41.5 H4350. It's the Hornady box load, but it works. 3 of us at my range shoot creedmoor's. They only thing we mess with is the seating dept.

If you haven't tried the 140 a-max give it a try. I think you will like the results.

I shoot the Hornady factory 140 AMAX match ammo out of my 6.5 Creedmoor with a 20" Brux #4 sporter 1-8.5" twist barrel. It chronographs at 2690 fps out of my rifle.

I shot six, five-shot groups on one target the other day at 300 yards for the competition thread in this forum that averaged just under .75 MOA. The smallest of the six five-shot groups was 1.3". I am not a particularly gifted shooter.

I also shoot the Hornady factory 120gr AMAX match ammo sometimes and it chronographs at 2890 out of my rifle.

i did my own load dev and came up with 41.4 gr, id say hornady was pretty spot on!

Hornady Created the 6.5 Creedmoor with the intent that the non reloader would be able to compete without breaking the bank.


I shot in a match for the very first time 2 weeks ago. It was raining with 40 mph winds gusting to 60 mph. We shot 600 yard prone. 3 strings of 15 rounds. I ended up shooting a 428 out of 450 with 13 x's. I was pretty happy with that considering I was shooting off a bipod and sandbag bag rest.

This was with the 140 AMAX 41.5 H4350. This round is just hard to beat.

I shoot a savage predator 110 in a 6.5CM, i have a old reload wizard set up my loads as follows.
140gr sst

95gr vmax

The 95gr vmax is a proven coyote face smacker at 300yrds.

I had finally had the chance to shoot this thing at 550yds this evening.

Since the original post I've substituted Varget for H4350's in my load simply because I have a bunch of it. Velocity is running 2875fps.

I started out on my 12 inch plate to check dope and then switched to the 6 incher for a five shot group.

The wind was light, but constantly swtching from 11 to 1. I only used the same hold for 2 shots and the rest of them I was holding off one way or the other trying to out guess the wind. Nothing special, but I'll take it. Like I said, the plate is 6 inches square.

We have very similar rigs, here's my 6mm Creedmoor. T4 Manners, X-Treme S/S action, CG trigger, 28" 8 twist HV Bartlein, Sightron 8-32 Tac. Have you tried RE17 in your 6.5? Should give you much more velocity with about the same powder charge.

I'm satisfied with the load I'm running. My goal for this rifle was to build something with moderate recoil and good barrel life. I could stoke some 140's with a heavy dose of 4350 and walk all over the load I'm running now, but it would somewhat defeat what I was trying to accomplish. By the way,that's a nice stick you've got there.

The bullet trap has a couple of u shaped lift lugs on the back side of it. I can drive up to it with my skid loader, run my tine bucket into the lift lugs, pick it up and go wherever I want with it. I wouldn't use it up close with low velocity rounds.

Hanging plates at an angle does direct shrapnel downwards. The proof is obvious when I look at the sides and botton inside the trap.

Thanks Deano. I was going to shoot a group to check potential of the rifle/ammo. The wind forced me to forget about that and simply try to keep 5 on the 6 inch plate. That's probably what I should have been focusing on in the first place.
