6.5 grendal

Re: 6.5 grendal

You must be using a long barrel, but that sounds like it's pushing the pressure up there as I would think 2700 might be a ceiling. Good luck.

Re: 6.5 grendal

Well got the rifle back and a load work up. Don't know how fast yet to much snow. It is shooting a good group with this load. Here is the work up on it.

Lapua brass
FGM small pr
123 lapuas
RL-17 30.8 grs
2.450 COAL

Here is the 2nd load just changing the powder.
RL-15 29.5 grs.

Re: 6.5 grendal

I just sold my A.A. 19.5" entry upper. It impressed me so much I thought I would do a switch barrel on my 10 FCP. So that said I am waiting for my 6.5CSS barrel from Lothar-Walther. This is the same as the 6.5 Grendel, chamber specs etc. Only for lock that Bill (Alexander Arms) has on the Grendel name is the reason it is not called the Grendel.
Barrel is 26" stainless , lapped and target crown. My gas gun did well at 600yd F-class, but in no way will do the 1k yd game. It also is at a disadvantage to the 6.5-284's that it has to compete with in the open class. I ordered a PPC bolt head from SSS to accomodate the cartridge,(recommended) one can also use the 7.62X39 bolt. Although I have heard of some problems with that. Check 6.5 Grendel.com forum
My reason for this build is to have a longer range Varmint/PD rifle. The reason I sold the upper is that I could get this barrel&bolthead AND a 24" .223 free floated upper with the funds I received. BTW the new .223 shoots 60grain A-max like a laser.
I also used the Grendel here in northern Mn. for deer. 120gr sierra hunters with BLC-2 took two Does nicely (one shot each) at 75 & 150 yds. Target load was BLC-2 and 107SMK's. Boy did it shoot those.

Re: 6.5 grendal

If I remember right I was getting 2800fps with the 107 SMK and 32 gr BLC-2. I can check my records. 19.5" barrel too, but I do remember that increasing barrel length to 24" would not have gained much in fps.
Alot of Grendel fans like the aa2520.

I have a couple 6.5 Grendel builds and all the load data I have (mainly use Alexander Arms and Hodgdon load data) none has and Reloader 15 data. Im thinking its pretty close to the Varget Data. Im on 65Grendel forum and never hear anyone using it either.
I mainly use BL-C(2), Win748, TAC, 2520 but I have tried alot of other powders but never RL-15 (no data for it).
Im always into trying a new powder.
What kind of load data do you have with the 6.5 Grendel and RL-15?
i.e. Bullets, Brass, Powder, OAL, Primer, etc.
Thanks.

The 2520 powder is great powder and it gave me SDs of 6 but I lost about 30 fps with this load.

My sweet spot on my rifle is 20 thouands off the lands. Either side of this the load would lose something. The speeds would be more up and down giving me higher ESs and SDS. Here is my finish load.

RL-15 29.5 grs
FGM 205 primers
Lapua brass
123 lapuas moly coated.
COAL at 2.414
2560
SDs 7.3
I use a 10 shots to come up with these numbers.

Re: 6.5 grendal

I see your OAL is 2.414" so you must be using a bolt gun. Im using a AR-Platform 6.5 Grendel so my OAL has to be 2.260" sometimes I could get away with 2.265" if I only load 5rds in a magazine.
Im not sure this load will work for me (RL-15) because of the short OAL it will be "crunching" alot of the powder down.
My grendel seems to work best with "ball" powder loads such as
TAC, 2520, BL-C(2),Win748 and im trying H-335 in some new loads.
I have loaded some 123gr. Scenars with Varget and 108gr. Scenars with Benchmark just to see what they do.

I heard alot of guys getting really good accuracy with the 95gr. Hornady V-max and Benchmark but the barrel I have is a 1:7.5 twist so im thinking those light bullets will not work to well, the 1:8.5 and 1:9 twist barrels would be better for that round. I hear guys having good luck with Vihta Vuori powder too, have you ever tried it?

Im just surprised the 120gr. Nosler BT shoots the best for accuracy out of my grendel because its a hunting round not a target round but whatever works! I would like to try the Barnes Banded Solid bullet (high B.C.) to see how it shoots but I have never had any luck with Barnes, it seem Lapua, Sierra and Nosler make the best bullets for the Grendel.
I dont do any hunting with the grendel just paper punching.

Re: 6.5 grendal

My gun is a bolt. I had the gunsmith lengthen the throat so I could seat the bullet out further. I did make it a single feed bolt. My loads seem to lose accuracy when I seated the bullet down farther.
The 2520 powder shot great in my gun but was a little slower than the RL-15. I have not tried the BL-C (2) powder or the Win powders. The gun shoots good with these powders. I don't think I would gain anything from switching. This cartridge seems to like the 2500 to 2600fps. Might gain a little by a longer barrel.

I'am sending some lapua brass back to the Rep. The rim is different thickness. Out of a box of 100 only 80 brass was good. The rim thickness measures .052 and the other 20 measure .060. It would fit in my shell holder.
