Need the hides mind here. Should I go 18" 20" or 24" on my 6.5 Grendel build the my SPR build morphed into. I'm trying to be able to get out to 7-800 yards with it and shoot a deer from time to time and some yotes and P-Dogs in between and some Long Range rifle matches now and again.

Heres a picture of the build so far, any other recommendations would be nice to. Sorry for the crappy picture.

Thanks

Scott

Re: 6.5 Grendel question here.

Get the 24" Sabre Defense Barrel w/ Target crown.

They shoot very well.

I have a 18" Sabre 6.5 Grendel build but I am building a 24" build on that same 24" tube.

Re: 6.5 Grendel question here.

I have had a 24 inch Grendel, and an 18 inch. I'm having the 24 changed to a 19.5inch because of the handling. I just didn't get that much more velocity out of that last 4.5 inches of barrel to make it worth the loss in handling, extra weight, and loss of mobility in close quarters.

The velocity tables noted above show that at 1000 yards, there is only 30 FPS difference between the 19.5 and the 24 inch barrel. I'm thinking that if by bullet is still supersonic at 1300 yards or so, that is good enough for me. If I need more than that, I have other rifles with much longer legs.

Re: 6.5 Grendel question here.

Another vote for the 19.5" (or 20" depending on mfg)! Easily supersonic out to 1,000yds and beyond with the right bullet (123gr Scenars) and plenty of terminal performance on small/medium game to your required distances.

Re: 6.5 Grendel question here.

I would vote for a 20" as the best all round choice. I have had
Grendels with a 24", 22", 18" and currently a light weight 16" barrel. Never had a 20" but that will be the next one. You gain very little, speed or accuracy wise with barrels longer than 20". A good twenty inch barrel will deliver almost all the Grendel case can.
Plus easier to tote around than anything longer and heavier.

Re: 6.5 Grendel question here.

Definetly go with the 20" barrel I just got done with my grendel build, and I am in the middle of load development and the first 20 rounds through the barrel averaged 2575 fps with the lapua 123gr scenar, you might gain a little bit of performance with the 24" barrel but I don't think its worth it if your going to be toting that thing around in the field.

My 24" Overwatch didn't do much more than this with 2520 and the 123 scenar. 2520 was the fastest listed powder I had for that bullet. I'd have to look it up, but I remember it being right at 2600fps and being relatively hard on brass. Agree with the above as far as a 20" barrel. I'd even consider a 18" barrel.

Re: 6.5 Grendel question here.

IMO the velocity gains for this cartidge are well worth the extra length. It needs all the help it can get..

I went with a 22" Lothar walther 6.5CSS barrel, I havent shot it yet..

Here is a S/A 22" Browning A-bolt for comparison.. No one will ever say that browning is "too long" for hunting.
