6.5 PRC

Tag. I'm curious too. Running a SAUM right now, feeling out the PRC as a more available alternative in the future.

I've pushed the 7Saum to customers over the last few years for an Elk caliber, but I recently spoke to somebody at Nosler who said the future doesn't look that good for factory loaded ammo or even brass. I'm hoping the PRC with offerings from hornady will be a worthy alternative even though it's a 6.5.

Here is a little data on the load I tuned for the 6.5 PRC barrel I have. I think a 26"+ barrel would take better advantage of this cartridge's volume and the burn rate of H1000, but mine is a 24". This chamber was cut with one of the first reamers that had the shorter throat as well.

24" Benchmark barrel
57.8gr H1000
140 Berger Hybrid jumped .012"
CCI 250 primer
3028 FPS

I bet RE26 would be a much better fit for that. It was designed for small magnums.

I have a buddy running a 6.5 GAP at 3200fps with 140gr VLD Hunting pills from a 24" barrel. He said the RE26 performed better than a handful of other powders he tried.

Food for thought...
Good point,
I'm not at all dissatisfied with the speed and precision I'm seeing and have quite a bit of H1000 already on hand. I know guys are getting higher velocities with the RE26, but I'll probably finish this barrel out with the H1000. When it comes time to start tuning a load for the next barrel I may give the RE26 a try.

I really wanted a switch barrel w 6.5 Prc and 7saum for hunting but the 7saum w high BC bullets run best from a long action from a mag. I'm a short action man so here i am w 2 6.5 on the lathe......

I have my remage barrel all together and shooting. It is a 26" Mcgowen barrel on a long action. I have only shot the Hornady 147 ELDM factory ammo, so far I'm seeing 2943fps. I have less than 50 rounds down the tube, so I expect to see the speeds increase some.

I think Nosler would rather you buy their nosler cartridges....lately when I check 7mm SAUM brass has been pretty plentiful. As stated above, 7 SAUM seated long in a long action is a giant killer.

My buddy is building one on a long action to run the new Sierra LOONNGGGGS while I'm staying w a short action 6.5PRC w Sierra 150.... should be a good comparison as we shoot under the same field conditions side by side!!

I think you're right on the money here.. Im planning on having a 30" barrel spun up in PRC, here's why...
Currently I have a 30" 6.5CM barrel in my DTA done by @orkan and TS Customs and this thing freakin shoots. Laser accurate, but the main point is the speed.

Im getting:
140 ELD or 140 Hybrid
2918fps with 42.5gr H4350.. Not a hot load, no pressure (Prime brass)
2959fps with 42.5 gr RE-16.. same pressure as above, (Prime)

147 ELD 2898fps @42.5gr H4350.. Fairly hot load, flat primers (Prime)

Im thinking I can hit 3100fps with the PRC without even pushing the powder hard at all. With a standard barrel i cant see a great amount of benefit, 100fps average over what I'm currently getting with the 6.5CM at the cost of +15gr powder. The 147 factory stuff is only around 50fps faster than what I'm doing now.

Just my thoughts..

Edit: Not to mention, I cant wait to see the new Berger 155 in the PRC.. That should be a show stopper!

The new bergers should be money out of the PRC. I’m having mine build right now with a 1:8 twist. So it should be interesting to see if the bergers will stabilize. I’m hoping for 2900-3000 with a 26” tube
