Hunting & Fishing 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

I wanna know too..

I'm guessing--it would work-not sure about how far out you would/could go.

Why a spike?? I've seen some pretty big spike elk...just sayin'

I like slightly larger calibers for elk. Good luck, have fun.

Alan,

Ahhh, You live in Utah.
GREAT elk hunting there.

Have a fantastic hunting season, and if you get a crazy hair come try some New Mexico elk hunting. Some years are good and others not so much...that's why it's hunting. Good luck.

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

Why a vld? Elk are large and easy to hit. You are not going to be shooting at extreme range with that little bullet I would guess. Tough and hard to kill clean. You are suggesting using a cal. many find marginal. Get a good bullet for it. Barnes TS. Nosler partition, Swift A frame etc. Avoid shoulder shots esp. with marginal bullets.

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

The animals I've shot with the VLD had massive expansion. I don't think I'd risk it using these 6.5 bullets on an elk. Swift makes a 130 grain Scirocco with a BC of .571. Nolser has the 130 Accubond with a BC of .488 and the 140 Accubond with a BC of .490. I'd lean towards one of these for elk for deeper penetration. If you're running a fast 6.5 (magnum), then no question I'd run a bonded bullet.

Kind of what I was thinking.

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

"overthinking" is only bad if you are thinking the wrong stuff. If you remove all the opinions on this thread that have killed less than 20 bull elk, you will get the real answer. There is no reason to shoot elk with an inferior bullet. Placement is key, but some bullets are known to exibit consistant controlled expansion. Those are the ones to use. A bull elk has about a 16"-20 inch square sure kill zone. Any bullet will shoot that well. I would suggest you get a known quality HUNTING bullet and put it there. It is your right to kill an elk if you have the permit, but not your right to wound one with a immature stunt.

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

ive taken deer and antelope with the 140 hunting vld from a 7mm rem mag but i would only use 168 or 180 vld hunting on an elk i feel the 140 from a mag would be to lite for an elk at any range.. my opinion.

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

Given the Characteristics of how the VLD functions to kill game,
penetrate 2-3" then grenade i don't think it matters if you use a
180 grain or 130 bullet. They'll all work.

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

Seems it would work fine so long as you only need that 3" of penetration first.

Choose your shots carefully as to angle, and they should kill fine. They definitely come with limitations however.

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

What does your gut tell you? If your iffy now then you may not have confidence the 130's will do the job when that nice bull is in the crosshairs. My own oponion is that the 130's are a bit light. My dad used a 270 Win with 140gr Partitions for years and has taken more elk than anyone i know. It pounds them. Right through the shoulders. I am using a 6.5 wsm with 140 Bergers. I haven't shot an Elk with it but based off of my experience with the 270 i have every confidence it will do the job.

Re: 6.5mm 130 Hunting VLD's for elk

I realize this is an old post.

I picked up some 6.5 140 nosler accubonds, but haven't used them yet. Seems like they should be the bomb for 6.5 hunting.
