So I'm on to another build and I really want to build a Light Weight deer slayer to 1k....so I narrowed it down to a 7/300wsm and a 6.5wsm......I like them both, but wanted to see if the 6.5 is worth because of the barrel life....
So I kind of want 1K lbs of Energy at 1k yds, I know both of these rounds are plenty capable.

This would be for Mule deer out to 800-1000yds, and I know 1k Lbs of energy is waay more than it take to kill a mule deer, but I like extra umpth.

What your thoughts?

Why the 7/300 WSM and not just the 7WSM? Doesn't the 7WSM have a titch more powder capacity or is it a wash with the shorter neck?

Re: 6.5WSM or the 7/300WSM?

Go with the straight 7WSM. I'm runnin 180 hybrids and hunting vlds at 3030 with a 27" tube. you could get close to that with a fluted hunting profile. Mine's an 8.5 twist. I've messed with 6.5's and they're lovely on paper. They're not shit on the big 7 tho. the 7 will be almost 3 mils difference in a 10mph wind at 1k. I know a 7wsm won't beat ya to death vs a rem mag with the same bullet or an stw. I shoot mine on a long action.

I think you mean 3/10th mrad difference in wind...

Still, I agree with you. The 7 is where it's at.

I am running a 284, with 175s @ 2825, and my partner runs a 260 with 140s @ 2850. Recently we were doing some 750-1250 yard shooting in some switchy 5-10mph winds. Honestly, to 1000 yards there wasn't much difference, but past 1000, my 7 was certainly more consistent than his 6.5. Also, past 1000, his misses were tough to spot while mine were loud and clear.

In regard to killing @ 1000, the 7 is absolutely going to hit harder, though I think a magnum 6.5 is going to kill just fine.

I have the 6.5wsm, thing is a friggin laser beam. Never actually shot an animal.though, just Target rifle, weighs about 20lbs. Super accurate though. .I have debated a long time about making a hunter version too. I prolly have 400 rds and no problems so far. Still accurate, no significant erosion, has a 3 groove barrel so that helps prolong life somewhat. I will have another at some point.

might need to look into the 6.5 SAUM, what MV are you getting with the 130s or 140's....

I figure for mule deer I wanted to stay with 130-140grn bullets....
I killed last year with my 7rm 180vld at 350, beside knocking him on his dick, wasted alot of meat. 130-140 seemed a sweet spot.

Re: 6.5WSM or the 7/300WSM?

Inside 1k I don't think you'll be able to tell a whole lot of difference. I chose the 6.5WSM (later bought a 7saum too). I'm running a single shot on a Stiller short action. Right now i'm running the 130grn Cutting Edge Bullets out of Norma brass with N-570 behind it a little north of 3400fps so far as I ran out of time to work further loads. Deer dead @ 655yds & 'lope dead at 370yds with little to no recoil what so ever. The 6.5Saum should be more efficient & little easier on the barrel. This is a hunting rifle, i don't give a shit about bbl life
