6.5X284 load advise please

I have recently purchased a custom remington 700 trued and blued long action, 26" rock creek barrel with 1:8.5 twist, and trying to get a few loads to start from. I picked up some 140gr berger vld hunting bullets, 100 pieces of lapua brass, and a set of hornady series II dies and got a microjust seater stem on the way for it as well, i have a few pounds of H4350 and some CCI BR2 primers, hoping to get a good load from this mixture. My rifle should be here in a week or 10 days. Just trying to get a few loads to work up to hopefully with the components i have.

If I were you, with a 6.5-284, I'd scrap the H4350 and pick up some H4831sc. My load was a 140 AMAX over 51.9gr of H4831sc and a Fed 210 primer...

Ok may do that, i got it in today and looks like its touching the lands at 3.131, what kind of velocity u getting with that load and will the cci br's make alot of difference? going by reloading store tomorrow

H4831sc is a popular powder used by many 6.5x284 shooters and there's quite a bit of load data out there. Unfortunately, it hasn't been working for me. I've used it with 140 Bergers, 140 A-max's and 142 SMK's with CCI BR2 primers. I've had some good groups lately with RL-22 but I haven't chrono'd them yet. Best groups were at the 51gr and 52.5gr ( max by the book) with no signs of pressure.

Have fun with it, they're a blast!

I had problems with over pressure when summer came around (worked the load up in the spring) with my 6.5-284 using H4350. The barrel was toast at 1200Y including a set back. If I had stayed with 6.5-284 I'd have strongly looked at H-1000 first and if no joy then I would have tried H-4831.

Nosler brass sucked!!! It wouldn't handle but 46 grains of H-4350 without blowing primers.

With Lapua brass I was using 48.5 grains of 4350 behind a Berger 140VLD in Lapua brass with a long throat which looks to be about the same as yours.

Do a ladder test if possible.

Ok finally got the moons and stars aligned and when i got off this morning i got to grab my gun and worked loads and finally get some trigger time behind my 6.5X284.

I loaded up a few loads with the 140gr berger vld hunting bullet, started from 47.5-50.5 grs of H4350, using lapua brass, and CCI BR's primers. I loaded up 7 in the 47.5 and 3 rounds for the rest hoping i could be sighted in 3-4 rounds at most, and that was great.

I had read somewhere these rifles usally peak 2-3 times in a wide spread of load ranges. Here is what i measured.

47.5gr=.442
48.0gr=.413
48.5gr=.648
49.0gr=.527
49.5gr=.449
50.0gr=.900
50.5gr=.794

I had no heavy bolts, took a dial caliber with me and measured all the case's after being shot while letting barrel cool 1-2mins between shots and had no abnormal case expansion and no primers popped out or bulged.

Should i try to work on up some and see if the group tightens up one more time or start at 49.2 grs and work up to 50.0 grs in .2 incriments to find that sweet spot or both?

Please give me your thoughts, also wondering if anyone is using these loads if they have chronographed them to give me some idea of the speed until i get a chronograph myself, all thoughs and feedback will be much thanked, thanks again.

A good friend of mine has been shooting 6.5x284 for a long time. He's shot out 8 or 9 barrels in it. He's always used H4831SC. I think he's right around 50-51 grains.

Anyway, do you have pics of the groups you shot? Do you notice where any of your groups go from vertical dispersion to horizontal?

Do you by chance know the velocity you was running with 48.5 grs of H4350, trying to get me a chronograph, also is that the same load you had overpressure with in the summer time or was it a bigger charge of the H4350?

With that combo (H4350 + Lapua cases) start at 47.0 grs. You can go up in .5 gr increments to 48, then .3 after that.

In that barrel length you should be seeing about 2875 with mild to moderate pressures, then another 100 fps on top of that when you start pushing it hard.

My mild load in a 30" barrel is 48.5 grs H4350 with a CCI primer and is going 2950 thanks to the extra barrel length. Guys have been known to push them to 3100 in a 30" tube, but that is getting pretty hot.

You have a good node around 49-49.5 grains. Do you not see it?

I do see it, just asking cause the group size went up at 50.0grs and started going back down at 50.5 didnt know if it would hit another node around 51.0 or 51.5.

Got to take my rifle back out today after reducing the trigger from 6.5lbs to 2.25lbs and is printing good at 129yards, the top target was really good until i jerked the single hole to the right marked "me" but there is 4 on the left that measures .322 and the bottom target has five shots in .398 on the left and the one on the right is the fouling shot after cleaning my barrel. Hope to get it out at 300 and see how it prints, the 49.0gr load is hitting 2935fps and the 49.5gr is hitting 2985fps.
