6.5X47 Lapua barrel length

Re: 6.5X47 Lapua barrel length

I run 2 6.5x47 Lapua's with 22 inch barrels. I love them both. I am getting 2780 fps with 38 grains of RL17 with the 123gr scenars. I have shot the 130 Bergers but not through a chronograph. Here is a picture of one of the 6.5x47L 22's.

Re: 6.5X47 Lapua barrel length

I have a Surgeon 6.5x47 Lapua. Set up with Surefire suppressor. Nice. Without a suppressor, I would go longer but not a disadvantage at 22".

Re: 6.5X47 Lapua barrel length

I have a 26" Lilja 3 groove 1 in 8" on mine. 36gr of Varget behind 130 berger gets me 2680 fps average. VERY mild but accurate. Probably in hindisght I might have opted for 24" or 22".

Re: 6.5X47 Lapua barrel length

My 6.5X47 has a 22" barrel. My go to load is a 123gr scenar ahead of 37.2gr of Re15. My chronograph says 2,798fps.

In my experience, Re15 gives great velocities in that cartridge. I've tried 130gr Berger VLD's w/ 38gr of Ramshot's Big Game and got 2,626fps. 41gr of Ramshot's Hunter gave 2,614fps. Probably would've shot faster with Re 15, but the 123 grain scenars shoot so well, why bother? IMR4007 gave even poorer velocities.

Re: 6.5X47 Lapua barrel length

I have a build going at Short Action Customs with a 27" barrel, but this rig will be strictly for long range shooting. Hoping to push a 130gr JLK VLD at about 2900ish.

Re: 6.5X47 Lapua barrel length

H4350, Varget, RL15 or RL17 should get you there based on feedback from other folks. I've seen some "fast" barrels in 25-26" range get to those speeds without over pressuring things.
I've read of some folks getting over 3050 with 130vld's out of 27-28"+ barrels, but as you push past about 3020 accuracy seems to start opening up even at distance.

It's going to depend upon your rifle to see which works best with what.

I should have mine done in a week or so. Surgeon RSR with a 25" Krieger 1:8" twist.

Try around 37.5gr Varget using CCI 450 primers with the 130 Bergers it's a higher node for most rifles.

My first test group with this load was .172" at 100yds 95F, 66% Humidity, 16mph winds prone with Bipod - that was the rifle showing off, I'm just not THAT consistent. Vertical looks good at 200yds as well. Furthest I've been able to test on paper so far.

Did pretty well on 45% IPSC out to 827 yds. I was running low on rounds by the time I tried it at 1250yds, and the wind was really hosing me switching every couple of shots.

Sounds cool. But it's going to be a little rough on that pretty brass. LOL

Mine has a 26-27" barrel, depending on how you measure. I'm running 130 VLDs at right at 2900 with Varget. I'm seriously considering chopping it down to 20" or 22", though. I've got a suppressor coming and the sucker is too long without the can.

ETA: I stopped at 38.0 gr because the accuracy became phenomenal at that point, which leads me to believe I have a slow barrel or my chrono is off. I'm getting ZERO signs of pressure and do not have a bushed bolt.

Re: 6.5X47 Lapua barrel length

I went with 26, testing 140 Hornaday match, 142 MK, 123 scenar, and 123 A-max. Powdes are H4350, and XBR8208. So for I've been able to hit 2800 with the 140's with really good accuracy. Seems like everyone likes the 123scenar. I want the 123A-max to work(it's cheep) but who knows. The rifle will tell me what it wants.
