I'm thinking about build either a 6.5x47 Lapua or a .243 for a long range accurate rifle. I know I can use my current A.R.-10 platform for the 6.5x47 which blows a 6.5 Grendel away in many ways. Does any one have a lot of knoweledge between the two and the major differences? Any guidance would be great.

Re: 6.5x47 Lapua vs .243

As a compromise, may I suggest 6xc? A 6mm 115DTAC exhibits superior bc than non vld 6.5, greater case capacity than 243Win, longer barrel life due to improved neck / body dimension, higher velocity, less drop and drift than both, roughly speaking, fine cases and dies available, very easy to load for. However, neither shooter nor target will likely know the difference in the three. There is no major difference.

I've much experience with 6.5x47 in custom bolt and gas. Loved 'em both. Would I do it again? Yes. After a 6xc. 6m/m bullets are less expensive. Now I shoot a 6Rat, 105Amax, Ar15. More accurate, less fuss, money,......

Accurate and Reliable Rifles built my Lapua barrel. Incredibly accurate and reliable.

Re: 6.5x47 Lapua vs .243

both the 243W and 6.5x47 are superb long-range rounds in a 308-sized cartridge. The 6.5 will definitely provide better barrel life and also fits in a magazine better because the COAL is shorter even with VLD match bullets. The 243 will have less recoil, which can be important for sling shooters. The 243 has a slight theoretical edge in ballistics. It's really personal preference. I choose 243W because all my rifles are dual-purpose hunting rigs and 243 factory hunting ammo is available just about anywhere.

Re: 6.5x47 Lapua vs .243

If these are indeed the only two choices, I would take the 6.5x47 over the 243w for barrel life only. IMHO, a 260 rem is just a no brainer when it comes to the 6mm and 6.5mm debate. Simply put any 6mm or 6.5 out of an AR-10 platform shoots lights out. The 260 rem or 6.5x47 are really apples and apples, either will serve you well and leave you with no regrets.
