Thinkin about building a 6.8, anyone recommend it? I don't know much about the balistics of the 6.8 though so please educate me. What kinda range can you get out of an 18" barrel on one?

Re: 6.8 AR 15

Good performing round, but hard to find ammunition for it, and when you do it is expensive when compared to other options. Range depends on what you're shooting. Paper/steel or game?

Re: 6.8 AR 15

Silver State Armory for ammo, excellent round for an SBR, very little velocity loss to about 12 inches, 90 grain Barnes TSX out of my 8 inch PSD is around 2550-2600 fps. my SHTF gun with an M-16 lower. range wise effective on hogs to about 300 yards with a 12 inch plus barrel

Re: 6.8 AR 15

Paper steel and hunting with an 18" barrel is what I'm looking at doing, and a local shop has plenty of ammo. I just don't know the effective range of a 6.8

Re: 6.8 AR 15

300 yards for medium size game, hogs, deer. Ive only gone out to 500 yds for steel with good success. paper,,,havent done much except zeroing. If you want to go long, 260. waiting for LMT to come out with a barrel for my MWS

Re: 6.8 AR 15

I have one, the upper was made by AR performance. With the 16 in. barrel and an acog TA55, it shot just as good out to 400 yds as my buddies rifle, which was an AR10 target. Only big issue the ammo is pricey unless you reload.

Re: 6.8 AR 15

I have a 700 pss and it's a tack driver, but I can get match grade hornady 110 gr for $20-$22 a box, vs $37-$42 a box for 168 gr fgmm. This is what peaked my interest in the round but of course asking the guy at the gun shop he said I could do almost whatever I wanted with the 6.8. That's why I'm asking what the real limits are from people that are not trying to sell it to me. I don't expect it to be a 1000-1200 yard precision rifle, but 800 yards would be nice to be able to hit.

Re: 6.8 AR 15

The 6.8mm is my go to hunting round. Silver State Armory is a good place to get 6.8mm but it can be expensive at almost a dollar a round. They do have lots of sales so you can get some cheaper at times. The 110 BTHP is a good and accurate round. I started reloading the round this year have worked up some loads for it. I use RE 10X with a 28.5 grains and that seems to work the best in my LWRC. My favorite hunting round is the Barnes 95 GR TTSX; accurate and deadly on deer and I have heard hogs too. It shoots 3/4 to 1 MOA out of a 16" LWRC at a 100. More than good enough for deer hunting. I would take some time and go on the 6.8 Forum and learn about the round. They have lots great info on their site.

Re: 6.8 AR 15

another +1 for AR15 Perf.

Several Hide members have had H build 6.8 systems, and have been very happy with them..... Great shooting systems, and good people to support.

The cost per round hurts! no doubt, but for hunting it wouldn't really be an issue unless your hunting in an overpopulated area in which you are 'thinning' the herd frequently.

on 68forums, look for "constructor", he is the one who knows.......

I'm not sure how it's going to act @ 800 yards??? Use the link below and enter as much info as you can to determine what your trajectory will be with whichever ammo you decide to use.

I went to SSA's website and entered the info (B.C., muzzle velocity, energy, etc.) they provided for their 110 grain Sierra Pro Hunter load and it appears it goes sub-sonic somewhere between 600-700 yards. I'm not really sure if, or how unstable the round becomes at that point. It may begin to tumble????...really not sure.

At a guess, I would say out to 600 yards for paper where you're still super sonic and looking at about 141.1" of drop with a 100 yard zero. For killing stuff, I've heard plenty of stories of guys dropping hogs out to 300 where you still have almost 800lbs of energy. (I think it was 775lbs something???)

Good luck,

Re: 6.8 AR 15

Awsome thanks, I actually downloaded a balistic program for my iPhone today and looked at it, there's alot of drop just at 300 yards. But I hunt under 250 yards anyway so it would work great.

Thanks for the link I'll check it out asap

Re: 6.8 AR 15

Less than 300 yards you'll love it. I feed all three of mine Barnes TSX, either 85 or 110 grain. Hogs hate em, they are good for them!

Top that AR off with an ACOG or a Trij 1x4 - you're killing hogs now!

Mine are all on AR platforms, spec your stuff out carefully. These things are sensitive to chambering, throat lead, and twist rate. You can get a lot more out of these with a 1/12 or 1/13 twist, chambered to SPCII or looser. A tight throat and 1-10 twist will not get as much velocity before showing serious pressure signs.

Look over on the 6.8 forums there is a lot of good info there. Be careful buying a "shelf upper". It will likely have a 1/10 barrel with a SAAMI spec chamber, not what you really need. IF the seller doesn't know/won't say, move on. it's probably the older tech stuff.

Re: 6.8 AR 15

Magpul ubr
Spike lower and upper
2 stage trigger
Troy iron sights
Free float rail
18" 1:11 or 1:12 twist barrel with 2" 4 prong flash hider

Is what I'm looking at so far for now
