6.8SPC ——> .224 Valkyrie??

I have an abundance of 6.8spc brass and primers from my AR. I have been thinking up my next rifle build and am leaning towards .224V. Can the 6.8 brass be necked down to the .224 bullet or is that too far of a jump? I’m not the most experienced reloaded so any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Yes, you can neck down the 6.8 SPC to make .224 Valkyrie. Ideally, you will want to anneal before doing so in order to avoid cracked necks. I haven’t done it, so can’t tell you if it can be done in one sizing operation or if it takes two. You will likely also end up having to turn your necks afterwards due to thickening of the necks (the material has to go somewhere).

Hopefully, someone here will have already done it and can shed some light on the details.

I thought about a bit more and just wanted to point out that factory .224V ammo can be had for pretty cheap. I can pick up American Eagle 75g TMJs for less than $10/box at Walmart or even less by the case lot at online retailers, with free shipping. It’s a great way to acquire some usable brass for not much coin.

By abundance = how many? I'll give you $.25/ ea for them shipped, if they are all the same sized primer hole. $.22/ea if they are mixed.
I'm working on a project that necks them up to 35 cal. Generally necking up is easier than going down. As stated above, going down might require neck turning.

Use care in annealing prior to reducing the neck size by much. It will sometimes lead to crushed shoulders rather than just a smaller neck. You can anneal afterwards and it will take a shot to help harden it back up and get you on the program.

As the last poster noted there may be a market for the cases you have and buying proper ones may give better accuracy since they're made for the intended cal. For stuff that is readily available it doesn't always make sense to mess with mods when you can get what you want.

Thanks guys! Annealing is out for me at this point. @CowboyBart. I’ll give you a number. Most likely will be by weight but I think I have about 1000 pieces of brass. Mostly Silver State armory and Hornady. Also have billets and primers. I’ll give you an inventory tomorrow via PM. Thanks
