When I applied with APD in the 80's and was asked to list my Hobbies, I included recreational and competative shooting.
I was told I was not what they were looking for.
Some cop later told me that was the worst answer I could have given.

Looked like more holes than shots fired. And that was with head turned and both eyes open.

Jim Zubiena was the real deal, pulled out of the newly formed IPSC crowd in the early 80's to be a technical advisor on Miami Vice, including teaching Don Johnson the nuances of combat shooting with the Bren Ten.

Love that scene. I read clearing and dropping the handgun was ad lib by Zubiena.
Also, Don Johnson had the only spare Bren Ten mag in the country.
It probably came from muscle memory from shooting IPSC, clearing his weapon after a stage.
Yeah, that was very stupid on Dornaus & Dixon's part, the guys that produced the Bren Ten, not tooling up for the mags.
The joke was, people would go to the set after a scene where Don Johnson did a reload, trying to find the dropped mag.

1) Police tend to be the worst, least disciplined shooters I have met while shooting competitively. Also they know everything about fire arms because they carry a gun all day.
2) After shooting many disciplines including moving tombstones, they sucked big time. Now if the guy was shooting back I would cut them minimal slack. He was standing there.
3) 25 yards........really...........if you can not hit something at 25 yards give up.

Not sure if I have said this here before but Mom taught me 3 things when I was very young IIRC started about 5-6 years old.
1) Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see
2) the only way 2 people can keep a secret is one has to be dead
3) NEVER trust a police officer.
I grew up in NY in a well connected family, there were different rules.
My dad said that as well, except #3 he would say, stay away from the cops and the mob.

I was 14 years younger than all the cousins, kinda an oops. My special purpose was to not get involved in the family business. Mom seen it degrading into nothing good. She kept her baby safe.

I knew Lenny Montana was a body guard and former pro wrestler. I didn't know he was a button man but should have just assumed.
eta- Alfredo Lettieri or 'Big Al', the actor that played Virgil Sollozzo in the Godfather, older brother was a real capo in the NY mob. Both the brothers died not long after the movie was released.
Rumor has it the mob wasn't pleased to learn Al's brother had been contacted by Francis Ford Coplela for technical advice, breaking the code of silence, or Omerta.
