I prefer gas guns, but I think a compact bolt gun will suit my purposes. I want to use this rifle for hunting and PRS style matches. Since this will be a double duty rifle, it needs to be balanced in terms of overall weight (not too heavy, not too light) and relatively compact in overall length. I did some research on barrel length vs MV and it seems like 24-26" would be ideal for best velocity, but what about a 22" barrel? I figure as long as I can keep a 110smk or 108eld above 3,000fps it will still shoot flatter than 6.5cm.

The reason for the 22" barrel is less weight, more compact, and my over-the-barrel suppressor only adds 3.5" to the end of the muzzle mimicking a 24" with a muzzle brake in overall length. The suppressor should help get some velocity back as well. Without this being a $3,000+ rifle, I am looking to get a Howa 1500 barreled action with a KRG Bravo chassis.

As far as hunting goes, it would be for coyotes and deer. Unless I get lucky enough to draw an elk tag someday.

What do you guys think? I have been out of the bolt gun game for a while, so I don't know if there are any magazine compatibility issues or action fitment issues I should be worried about.

I think the 6mm Creedmoor isn’t the best caliber if you want to hunt elk. If you’re considering hunting I think you should step up to a 6.5 Creedmoor or .308. They won’t shoot as flat, but I think they’re better dual purpose calibers. A 6mm Creedmoor is a great prs round as well as some of the other 6mm’s.

I suggest 108 eld's over 110 smk, the smk has a reputation for being finnicky and sending out fliers. Twist rate likely an issue, but I know 1:7.5 or 1:8 will work for 108 eld's, shot a few thousand this past year in PRS.

For PRS I would be sure the balance of the rifle is good, front to back. Balance the rifle on a game changer bag placed in front of the magazine. That's what I would try to accomplish with my barrel length and contour.

You'll have to give thought to what weight overall is acceptable. But if shooting PRS with this rifle is a goal proper balance would be a high priority if you ask me.

Barrel life is perhaps another consideration. Many folks will say 1200-1800 are possible ranges for 6 Creedmoor. The harder you push it the lower the barrel life. I'm only pushing 108 eld's at 3000 and have 1700 on one rifle still shooting good. Just something for you to consider.

If your hand loading, you have a lot of options for calibers. If you're buying factory ammo 6 Creedmoor and 6.5 Creedmoor are pretty attractive.

As has been said 6mm isn’t the best choice for elk but it will certainly work if you put the right bullet in the right spot. I know I guy that goes to CO every year for the past 10 years or so and tags out with a 6-284 shooting 95gr Berger’s. He’s got a ton of rifles but continues to take that because of how it works, he’s shot them in excess of 500 yards too. 6mm is perfect for deer and coyotes though.

22” won’t neuter it too much and that’s what I plan on putting on my Q when my 26” is burnt out. I’m not shooting matches with it though, it’s strictly a critter rifle.

My 6 creed has 20” light varmint barrel. Shoots the factory Hornady 103 eldx at 2870fps. With the Mausingfield, Whiskey 3 chassis, and the Nightforce nxs it weighs in right at 13lbs.

With a 22" you're probably going to have to push it hard to get 3k. My old 24" ran 2985-3010 depending on lot of H4350 with 105 Hybrids. Varget might get you a little more speed, but it's still going to be at the warm end.

I couldn’t find a howa 1500 action with a 22” barrel, so I will just go with the 24”. I thought about 6.5C but I am rarely going to shoot elk in comparison to competitive or practicing.

I shoot a 108 eldm at about 3050 out of my 24" proof. I have a Manners t4A with mini chassis, defiance deviant action, athlon cronus scope, ckye pod, TBAC 7" suppressor. The whole thing weighs about 12.5 lbs. It's a nicely balance rifle and not too heavy to carry around. I have actually gotten a couple cow elk with mine, did just fine. Probably not the gun you want if you have a hard to draw tag in your pocket however. If I did anything to mine for the competitions I shoot I would actually add a little more weight to it.

I am in the midst of a 6 Creedmoor build myself, and plan on going with a 22" barrel on a Howa action. Per the (limited) testing shown here, it looks like I ought to be right around 3k FPS with heavy-ish projectiles.

Depends on how hard you are willing to push it. My old 24" Bartlein got ~3k with 105 Hybrids, but the same load in my 26" tubes got ~3100. Personally, I wouldn't go any shorter than 24" for a 6 Creedmoor if you're planning to run it in matches, and I consider 26" to be ideal, especially with H4350.
