I prefer gas guns, but I think a compact bolt gun will suit my purposes. I want to use this rifle for hunting and PRS style matches. Since this will be a double duty rifle, it needs to be balanced in terms of overall weight (not too heavy, not too light) and relatively compact in overall length. I did some research on barrel length vs MV and it seems like 24-26" would be ideal for best velocity, but what about a 22" barrel? I figure as long as I can keep a 110smk or 108eld above 3,000fps it will still shoot flatter than 6.5cm.
The reason for the 22" barrel is less weight, more compact, and my over-the-barrel suppressor only adds 3.5" to the end of the muzzle mimicking a 24" with a muzzle brake in overall length. The suppressor should help get some velocity back as well. Without this being a $3,000+ rifle, I am looking to get a Howa 1500 barreled action with a KRG Bravo chassis.
As far as hunting goes, it would be for coyotes and deer. Unless I get lucky enough to draw an elk tag someday.
What do you guys think? I have been out of the bolt gun game for a while, so I don't know if there are any magazine compatibility issues or action fitment issues I should be worried about.
