What do you guys think about guns chambered in some of the 6mm class rounds for tactical competitions? The reason I ask my shooting buddy/gunsmith and I have done a couple of these with .260s and a 6.5x284s. We have both had and shot .243s with 8 twist barrels, shooting 105s and 107s. What we have seen at my range they do good with these high b.c. bullets out to 800yds but beyond that energy seems to drop enough it is hard to spot hits. Are we better off to stay with the 6.5 class for energy on target?

No, not the 6.5x284. We have done two comps with bolt guns and now thinking of trying it with a 243 in a ar platform. I guess I was not clear on that. I should say that the drop and wind drift of the 243 is close to our .260s , but energy on target suffers.

I have a 6mmAR Turbo 40. 105's at 2900. I can spots misses very well in the dirt. We could see the dust signature at a mile.
The dust signature with 115's out of my 6x47L are easier to see.
My main concern with 6mm vs 6.5 is barrel life. With semiauto's it's easy to burn through ammo quick.

What about using the 105's for long range matches on steel. Are there any problems with RO's calling hits?

Hits are not the problem, near misses in anything other than a dirt dusty backdrop are the problem. The little pills do not kick up enough debris to spot hits in a grassy/wet impact area.

I'm using H-4895,30.2 grains at 2.245 OACL with 105 Amax out of a 8 twist 26" Krieger. It's the 40 degree shoulder version that 6mmAR sells.
