6mmCreed for the wife?

Hey fellas, Im wanting to get my wife into shooting. I have a few 308s, and 223s, but Id like to get her something with little recoil and can obviously stretch out far as she gets better as a shooter. In my opinion, the 6.5 was too close to my 308s to justify the costs of a new caliber.

The 6mmCM has my attention, but I dont know much about it. My plans are a bolt action in a chassis. It will be suppressed 100% of the time. I havent decided on which action,chassis as I am in the very early stages of this. The scope will most likely be a Vortex PST Gen2 cause of my Veteran discount and the price they offer is very hard to pass up.

I have plenty of land to stretch out the 6mm (If I decide on this caliber). I have a private 1500yd range so we can shoot together every day. There will be a very small percentage of hunting. She doesnt really hunt, so Id say maybe 1% of this setup will be hunting small whitetail deer. I want this rifle to be enjoyable and set the long range hook in her lol.

Great caliber if you want to shoot factory ammo, with low recoil. Unless you're going above 24 inches in barrel, you're probably going to be around 2950-ish, maybe 3000 with a can. Hand loading obviously beats this and most are pushing them in the 3100fps range. I say go for a Bighorn Origin and drop it into a KRG Bravo. John at Keystone Accuracy can get you a barrel.

Other than that, I'm envious of your private land and the ability to shoot on it every day. I almost hate you.

youll get 100 different 6mm suggestions, so ill start (ive probably written the same thing 100 times so far)

as accurate as anyone can shoot
can load flat base bullets if you want to compete in 1-200 yard benchrest
beats a 308 out to 1000
has a little recoil so its not like shooting a 22lr
can hunt white tail, hogs or Pdogs with it if you ever want
factory ammo is incredibly accurate if you dont want to reload
and if you do start reloading its laupa brass

Mine was ~3064fps with Hornady black box stuff with a 26in barrel.

I really enjoy my 6cm, rifle weighs ~20lb and its a joy to shoot. Its my first foray into the 6mm world so I am sure there are better options overall, but so far, I have no complaints bout my pick.

I like my 6creed i built off a Big horn origin that was formally sitting in a krg bravo, with the 105 gold medal Berger it will consistently .5moa or better with an average 3100 fps in cooler weather from a 26" barrel. My hand loads are running right around 3085 with H4350 to allow me a safety margin for PRS/NRL match speed cap.

Given that you're concerned about recoil, you want factory ammo, and you're going to run suppressed, I would suggest 223. If you don't already have one set up to run 75-77gr ammo, I would set one up around that. I ran 77gr SMKs in my trainer for 1k rounds, and I was able to reach over 1k yards with it. I've got a good bit more experience, and wind with a 223 will be a challenge, but it fits your other requirements.

If 223 isn't acceptable due to performance, then 6 CM will work - but you're going to see a good bit more recoil running one suppressed. My trainer and 6 Creedmoor PRS rig are pretty close in weight (the 6CM is about 1# heavier), and the 223 is suppressed where my 6CM has a Hellfire brake, but the 223 has noticably more recoil than my 6mm does. Considering both rifles are north of 15#, your desire for a light weight rifle is just going to make the recoil difference worse. Putting the can on the 6CM makes a major difference in felt recoil and push off target, with the brake being the clear winner.

6 br has factory ammo but its expensive.

If youre using a can then the 6 creed will not recoil much at all and the factory ammo price is the most appealing thing for it, a good variety thats only increasing. 1500 yards will be quite the stretch but still doable, Ive done it with my 6xc which is just a bit slower than the creed. 1200 is more like its reasonable every day max.

The 6CM is likely the very best way for you to go.
In my experience, it is incredibly accurate.
Here’s my 6CM story: I have an AI and shoot 6.5CM 90% of the time. I compete a little, and my AI with a Bartlein barrel is really honestly a .58-.6 moa gun. I got the bug to play with a 6CM. Not a ton of reasons besides I just wanted to.
I asked my gunsmith DMR_LLC here in Vegas to spin me up a barrel. Fast forward to getting the barrel, grabbing some Hornady 108 ELD-M and heading to the range. THE FIRST TRIP....first day, the barrel shot a .24 moa 5 shot group, and TWO .37 moa 5 shot groups!! I’m talking the first 17-18 shots down the tube. (2-3 to get sighted in/adjusted)
It is the most accurate combo I have ever shot. It makes my 6.5 shooting.5 moa seem sloppy.
Idk if it’s the barrel, cartridge, or a bit of both, but my 6CM did not disappoint.
I’ve taken it out to 1200 yards already, and this thing is a laser beam. I know that nothing is free, and barrel life will be roughly half of my 6.5CM, but I have several other calibers to shoot, so I SHOULD get a year out of it at least.

Why not have her try out the 223 suppressed first? Words to help you justify a new rifle below

Go 6 Creed with Hornady 108 grain factory. Hornady's ammo has shot great out of every rifle I can think of in recent memory at the local matches I shoot. Guys buy rifles, ammo and then some start reloading with the fired brass while others say screw it and just shoot the factory good stuff.

Great call on the suppressor. My lady shooter hates the noise and concussion of a compensator. Shooting suppressed, she always says there's less "recoil" than a comp. There's not, her perception is increased recoil from the louder noise. She loves shooting suppressed and I love shooting with her.

I know this is going to be a stretch, but try to get her out to a match to feel the different stocks / chassis. If you have a bunch of buddies ask them to come to your range and set them all up on barricades so she isn't feeling the weight, just the stock/chassis. Let her give you all the input and just write things down. If she finds something she falls in love with it will be MUCH easier to get her shooting often.

Same with the action. Have her cycle the action and dry fire, ask for feedback. Generally a heavy bolt lift is much more noticeable and much less desirable. Whatever it is, pick something reliable like an Impact, Deadline, Bighorn or Defiance so she's not struggling with it.

You may also consider either a shorter barrel or carbon fiber. My lady shooter hates my 20 lb rifle but loves her sub 15 lb rifle. It's not the popular trend among competition shooters recently, but it might help you get her started.

I have a 223 AR15 that shoots the MK262 77grn. Its a great combo. Of course she can shoot anything I have. But hearing, seeing those little bitty bullets far away is a challenge lol.

Yep, it is. Doing a 24-26" bolt gun will help, if for no other reason than extra velocity. With my hand loads, I can get the 77s to 3k FPS fairly easily, and I have even run 80gr ELD-Ms as fast as 2985 with a stiff charge of Varget. I've run the 80s out to 1200 yards, but 1k and in it's not difficult to spot them on steel. 223 in a bolt gun really comes alive with reloads, but even good quality factory ammo can really shine from a long barrel.

The question is, which do you want more - lower recoil or better ballistics and impact signature?

The only reason I'd brought up recoil was you mentioned it in your original post as one of the things you were looking for.

If you reload, consider 6BR. I built my wife a 6BRA that she loves. May even spin up a .22 BRA barrel next if she ever burns up that barrel.

If you don't reload, .224 valkyrie is what I would lean to.

I think this is a great idea, I went that direction myself. Bighorn Origin, Bartlein 27" Rem Varmint, KRG Bravo, Geissele S700.

Put my .308s in the vault years ago and they're rarely getting any action now, same with the .300WM. I took my wife to the Bergara Experience last year to try and get her hooked on 6.5 Creedmoor and it worked, she basically begged me to buy a new rifle after she shot an HMR Pro in 6.5 Creedmoor with a Dead Air Armament can mounted. Sweet deal! The recoil with 6.5 Creedmoor is notably less, especially with a brake, or suppressor; even more so for the 6 Creedmoor. You are definitely on the right track madppcs, it's an almost Machiavellian stroke of genius. No questions we need a new rifle, a new custom action, barrel, some more ammo, or a newer, better scope, ... Yessssir! Should've done something like that a decade ago, maybe even just with a .22LR, I could kick myself.
