HI Lowe,

The reamer was designed by a gunsmith about 9 years ago. I think PTG made it. It's a .270 neck so I turn my case necks and it has a .208 freebore that was made for 115's. Yes, too long for 105's but it works well with the hybrids but on the other hand I can seat any bullet out far. The tolerance is small to virgin brass.

Re: 6x47 Lapua

I'm getting about 3127fps with 39gr of H4350 pushing Berger 105 Hybrids out of my 6x47. Going to try a tenth higher and lower and verify with longer strings of fire. Did any of you guys see less distinct peaks and troughs between tighter loads?

Typically I'll see velocity increase with powder charge and the chrono numbers will tighten up, then fall off and slacken up, then they tighten up again like waves on the ocean. Typically its pretty obvious and distinct. When it's tight, it will tighten up into single digits, then slack back to 20-30fps for SD numbers then they come down and tighten up again. With the 6x47 and H4350 the chronograph was showing the same pattern, but much flatter. The worst of the SDs was around the 20s, it tightened up to 5, then slacked back into the 20s again. Guess I'm just used to larger swells than this. Today I was getting SDs that looked like 24, 22, 21, 5, 23, 25, 26 etc. Jumping up in .2gr increments.

I'm going to check the 39gr load and I'm going to try a tenth higher and lower as well tomorrow. Frankly, I'd be fine with 3127 with an SD of 5 and ES of 11 that I got today...we'll see.

If you're using a FL Bushing sizing die for the 6x47Lap, how much neck tension are you running, -.002-.003? Thanks! I run approximately -.002, but curious what others are using. My ES with a couple lots of H4350 has been in the high teens, with a SD of 8-10 on two different barrels.

On a side note, just for shits and giggles in another 6x47 Lapua rifle, I've been experimenting with IMR4350 and Hornady 105 BTHPs, in Lapua brass as well as reformed 22-250 Winchester brass. The results @ 400-450 Yards have been surprisingly good thus far, but I need to stretch the legs on this combo (maybe this weekend), and run it over the chronograph before I determine if it is worth posting about. Stay tuned for further details.

My loaded rounds measure about 0.270 I'm trying 0.269 & 0.268 bushings for neck tension

Settled on 39.1gr of H4350 with 105 Hybrids. Gets me 3102fps SD 5fps out of a 26“ Criterion 1:8 twist. Easily 1/2 moa rifle, I've got several sub 1/4 moa groups with it. Loving this cartridge!

Preliminary results, as I'm still testing seating depth, but so far

22" Kreiger 5R 1:8

105 hybrid

39.8 gr of IMR4451

3040 fps with single digit SD's

groups were in the high .4's and that was with zero seating depth testing, and on virgin brass IIRC after checking the chamber they were jumping about .060" I'm hoping to get those groups down into the .3's consistently by messing with the seating depth. time will tell.

This is a brand new rifle and caliber for me so this is pretty early, I tested H4350, IMR 4451, and H4831SC got similar results from H4350 and IMR4451 so decided to go with the IMR since I can actually get it in 8lb jugs and I'm down to my last jug of H4530.

EDIT: Update with 400 rounds on the barrel the above load has now increased in velocity to 3120 fps and retains a low SD however it's on the edge of pressure issues when it gets hot. I've seen the exact same thing happen in my 260 with H4350, so I don't take this as an instability issue with the powder, it's just pushing the load a bit too hard.

I've reduced the charge to 39.5 gr and I'm still getting 3060 fps with an SD of 5 and grouping in the .3's

The last group I ran (5 rds) over the chrono produced an SD of 3, I didn't note the ES number, the barrel also settled in a bit and the velocity is up to 3060 with the same load and once fired brass uniformly resized, the first rounds were all with virgin brass that was taken out of the box, sized (neck only really, no bump) chamfered/deburred, primed and loaded. I fully expected the SD to go down a bit just by more consistent brass sizing and it did.

I gotta say I'm liking this powder a lot, works great in my 260 too.

I tried H1000 once. Too slow in burn rate for this cartridge so can't get enough powder in there to be effective. I got slow FPS and horrible SD and ES.

H4831SC was the slowest I could get to work right and the load is compressed.

Latest load on the new Mausingfield is 38.6 grains of H4350. 10 year old cases, CCI450's, 105 hybrids.

28" Krieger, 8 twist. 3114 fps.

Ladder test in .1 grain increments.

Tried the Tubb 115 RBT DTACs today, still on the same 6x47L barrel, 26" Criterion Prefit 1:8 twist

38.4gr H4350 is getting me 2995fps with an SD of 3fps, if the BC information on these is correct they're going to be my new favorite load. 0.620 is almost a full point better than the 105gr Hybrids and I'm only giving up ~120fps

Works out to a trade off at 1k of about 10" more drop which is nothing but a full 10" less drift...testing continues!

105 Hybrid, fed205M, H4350 40.4gr producing 3030fps, tight ES and 1/4moa

Just working with the 115DTAC RBT HBN coated
Driving them with imr4451, lit with a 205M I found accuracy at:
.015 off
39.8gr giving 2935fps
41.0 gives 3006fps ES:11 SD:6 accuracy of 3/8"(maybe better, breezy)< I think that will be my new load!

I just had my rifle re-barreled to a 6x47. I have a couple questions.

1). Since I've just taken some 6.5x47 brass and run it through my 6x47 FL die, should I consider these first loads a fire-forming series? Not sure how reliable the results will be until the brass has been run through my rifle at least once.

2) I have a new muzzle brake. Should I do my load work-up without the brake or with it on?

With the MB.

Shoot 100 rounds to "run in" the barrel. Then the cases will be formed and your barrel will have sped up.

Since you are necking down anyway it's a good idea to set a false shoulder causing a little bit of force against the bolt.

Re: 6x47 Lapua

Came across this recently as well. My new barrel was reamed with a no turn reamer. The current lots of Lapua 6.5x47 have much thicker brass making up the necks. I had to turn my necks to get .002 of clearance despite the use of a no turn reamer. You guys may want you check your loaded round neck measurements to avoid pressure issues.

I just didn't want to waste time on load development if the brake, the brass or the barrel were variables to cause inconsistent results. Thanks for the help

I can't believe you guys are getting over 3100 with the 105 hybrids. I'm shooting a 26in Krieger with 40.5g of H4350 and Im around 3040. Maybe because my barrel has less than 100 down the pipe?

I'm only getting 3100 with 80g Triple Shocks with the same powder charge

Any ideas? Old powder?

It's pretty common to gain 50-100fps when you get 1-200 rounds down the barrel. My speeds are hard to compare to. 16" barrel for me

It'll speed up some.

Slow barrels exist and that is low FPS for the load and being 26". My old 21.75" gets 3020 fps but was low 2900's when new.

well my barrel sped up, just like you guys said. Im getting 3160fps with 40.5g of H4350. Im not getting pressure signs, but I am betting bullet spring back from compressing the powder so much. Im going to back off the powder a bit and target the node at 3100fps.

Sunday at 6:32 PM

This thread was an immense help to me loading for my new 6.x47L. Thanks.

For anyone curious, the average load for 105 Hybrids and H4350 is 39.52 grns / 3079 FPS, give or take. That's what I used as my base. Would like to try the RB115 Dtacs if they ever come in stock. Maybe 110 SMKs.

26 inch 1:7.5 Twist Bartlein - Mausingfield
105 Berger Hybrid
20 thou jump
CCI450
39.3 grns H4350
3063 FPS

SD -7FPS \ ES 18FPS

Ive Had great luck with my forster FL die and wet lube like unique. chamfer outside and just one pass, Leave a false shoulder on the neck so your bolt closes on a case with medium/light tension. The false shoulder makes your cases fireform more consistently and your first loading will shoot more accurate.

Also fyi I use forsters "bench rest seater" as my seating die, love it.

is there any one that might send me to the right direction to see who might have a guide on necking down the brass?

Echoing MTYotehunter, I have had great luck w/ my Redding Neck Only die. Just put in the bushing with the neck size you want, some lube and re-size away. Leaves a 'false shoulder' as MTYote describes, but after the first firing, its gone and you are good to go. I'm using a 6.5x47L Redding Micro seater and having great luck w/ the 6mm 105s... I'm too lazy to buy a 6mm seater and I really don't need it as the 6.5mm will do it just fine.

Got my 6x47L load shook out well enough to share it. It's right in the wheelhouse with some others posted...

37.5 to 37.8gr of RL16 give 2940/2943 fps
Still work to do but it look promising.

I'll load 10 per charges in 0.1gr increment for 37.5 to 37.8 and see the results

Anyone have more data on the 115's with RL16?

again running coated 115dtac, 450rnds without cleaning and still shooting1/4moa

This morning, just for the heck of it because I've always been curious what speeds would be, I shot five rounds of 95 grain SMK pointed bullets/R17 powder/CCI450 primers, over my 35P in .5 grain increments starting at 41 grains. Below are the crazy velocities I got. The Chrono has alway been right on BTW.

Mausingfield action, 28", 8 twist barrel.

41gr - 3378 fps
41.5 - 3403 fps
42gr - 3454 fps
42.5 - 3480 fps
43gr - 3534 fps. WOW!!!, no ejector swipe, bolt wasn't sticky yet, primers not totally flat yet but almost. Pretty sure I could have gone to 43.5gr which I would estimate overpressure in my rifle and close to 3600 fps and I might as well mention such a charge would be halfway up the neck.

At 3534 fps I bet the BC would be .52 instead of .495. Bullet might end up blowing up mid air, don't know. Fun experiment so far though.

Thought you guys would enjoy the info.

Fire forming with Berger 108s & 38gr RL16. ~3000 fps in a 26" 8t bartlein. 5 shot groups generally sub 1/2 moa, some well below. I think the node is going to be around 3080-3100, but it shoots acceptable with almost any powder charge.

Just started into loading for the 6x47. I’m wondering what some have seen if anything from a velocity or accuracy shift between necked down brass first firing with false shoulder to second firing after it has been “formed”??

Just got this barrel and did some velocity ladder tests for max load even though I’ll need to run again after it speeds up, and working on seating depth right now with 110 smk. Using necked down lapua brass and varget. So far pretty pleased with initial results but wonder if I will have to make any adjustment to load after brass all has 1st run on it.

I'm seeing a 30-50 fps reduction on the 2nd firing.

Single digit SD's, occasional single digit ES ...

H4831SC: not enough case capacity to get these moving well but SD's and accuracy good ... stopped testing ..

Note : 39.8g - 41.0gr H4350 shoots 105's, 107 SMK and 108g ELD very well ... from 3,070 - 3,150 fps

Following. What’s barrel life looking like with the 6x47? I’ve seen a bunch of conflicting posts. Some say 1200, some say 2500+

What load did you shoot to get 2400? Also which brand barrel?

It was a Broughton and it was a super accurate barrel. I won a tactical match done at 100Y on paper, a test for a big match that the club was planning for some stages, it was easy with that barrel, the bullet pretty much touched the crosshair all the time!

I was just reading about good barrels yesterday on a benchrest site. They claim a good barrel will tolerate multiple set backs and still shoot well. One guy had over 3000 rounds before he retired it from match use (winning often and scoring high) then after that onto varmint use, 3rd set back I assume.

This current barrel is a good one too and why I think it's still going strong. It's a Krieger. It's on it's first set back (at 400 rounds, long story) so it's been chambered twice now, I'm going to give it to a friend when it gives out this time and he'll set it back again.

Did you ever do any more testing on this load?

Ended up abandoning the 110smk, would see promising results, and the next outing they would disappoint. Switched to 105 hybrids, RL16, 38.5gr, 3095fps.

Well that further confirms my suspicion on that bullet. I just seem to get a lot of vertical spread and inconsistency mostly on elevation with single digit SD's. I was going to give RL16 a try when powder shows up next week, been using Varget. Thought it was low case fill % with Varget or maybe just poor shooting on my part which is still possible but seemed to have too many unexplained misses. Now thinking maybe a bullet swap might be needed too. Shame as BC on them is awesome.

Felt the same way, a few other buddies couldnt get them to shoot either. Not worth the headache. If you like the BC, i tested the 1115 DTAC and it shot great. Respectable groups but nothing crazy, tried the hybrids and it wouldnt shoot anything you couldnt cover with a dime, it was like a whole new rifle.

I have some 115 rbt dtac on hand but always been hard to tune for me in other barrels never tried them in my 6x47 though. I have some 108 eldm on the way and a few 105 hybrids on hand I guess I will be starting over probably with 108 first and see how it shoots, if its not satisfactory I'll give 105 a try.

i tried the 108 ELD as well, it was not bad, but i dont see a reason to use them over the 105's, the BC on the 105s is better too.

Yeah I know it has a slight edge but 108 is cheaper and hopefully more frequently available but seems like the 105’s are back in stock now. Hopefully I can test and decide which to run while that’s the case.

I've been shooting this load in the PRS this year. Moved from 105 Hybrids because the Rock Creek barrel I had really liked DTACs over the bergers.

38.7 grns H4350
26 inch Rock Creek 7:5 twist
115 RBT/pointed DTACs
CCI450 primers
2965 fps
Normally an SD of about 6 fps.

Well got load workup done on 108 eldm with rl16 today and must say I’m really happy with improvement over the 110 smk. Ran a ladder at 510 and had a 3 shot .6 grain node going up in .2 grain increments that was just a hair over .25 moa and had SD of 7. Came home loaded up 25 went back and shot 5 at 100 & 510 again and was under half moa. Wind had picked up by then. I then went to 1360 and had 4 rounds with less than 3 inches vertical. Wind was 12 average with some 18-20 gusts that gave me some horizontal 7-8” Wide but I’ll take that.

Made it up over 3100 with 40.5-41 but accuracy wasn’t as good no pressure. Load I settled on was right at 3000 fps

1360 Target

All these temp insensitive powders are probably all about the same when it comes to barrel life.

I had changed over from H4350 to H4831sc to attempt to get more barrel life. Nope this current barrel lost 77 fps recently between 1400 and 1550 rounds. It's till shooting decent but that's not going to last but a few hundred more rounds. Only had H4831sc through it.

My next experiment will be trying out Hv100 because it has a lower flame temp, I'll use it for practice and play. If the new barrel likes R16 I'll use it for matches.

I never tried Varget, it won't give very good load density, except with lighter bullets.

How about RL26 in the 6x47? I know guys are using this w/ the 110gr SMK and getting very impressive velocities and precision. No idea on the temp sensitivity and barrel life.

I could be wrong as I haven't tried it but RL16 I run out of case capacity before maximizing velocity, or hitting pressure with a 108 eldm. I would imagine a slower powder would have the same issue. I will run it on quickload just to see. It is spot on with my current load.
