I recently purchased a Redding 6XC micrometer seater directly from David Tubb's website. This seater uses a 30cal seater stem rather than the 6mm of a "standard" 6XC seater die.

The problem is, I'm trying to use the Sierra 110gr SMKs, and the bullet tips contact the seater stem - not the ogive. I called Superior Shooting and they said they wouldn't modify the stem.

Would anyone be be willing to machine the very ID of the seater stem for me? I don't have a drill press and don't want to mangle the thing with a cordless drill.

Can you order a 6mm seat stem from Redding? I don't see it on their site, but a call to them might yield something useful?

The Tubb seater is bored out to use a 30cal seating stem, so that it contacts the bullet further down the ogive. This stem is supposed to work with the 105 Hybrids and 115 DTacs, unfortunately it doesn't want to play nice with the long 110 SMKs.

I could try buying a 30cal VLD stem but I think only the center "tip" area of the stem needs to be drilled out.

    SAM,
I understand your dilemma. Up until the 110 Sierra we had no issues with the seating setup. I would offer for you to send the seater back if you like. The reason we use the 308 seater stem is simply better run out on loaded rounds with 105/115 and lighter bullets. This is accomplished by increased diameter of the seating stem engaging a more consistent circular portion of the bullet for reference.
You could also buy a 7'08 die with a vld seater stem but it will need the flange shortened for the 6XC.

More questions give me a call to discuss 8063232666

    David,

Thanks for the feedback. When I called Superior Shooting this was the same thing they told me. Unfortunately I will be sending the die back to you, as Redding informed me they would be unwilling to modify the stem as well.

As of right now I am set on at least trying the 110 SMKs, and have a bunch on hand. If they don't work and I move to the 105s or 115s, I would consider giving your seater die another shot.

    Thanks,

    Sam

Buy a 6.5x47 Redding comp seater, and a vld seat stem for it, it will serve you right.
EDIT: actually, the reg stem may work
