7-08 velocity

Savage model 10, 26" CBI barrel:

Before melonite: 46gr H4350, 162 amax @ 2.825" COAL, FC 308 brass-->708...2805fps Very compressed charge, case capacity limited

After melonite: 45.4gr H4350, 162 amax @ 2.825" COAL, FC 308 brass-->708...2785fps Compressed but not as much, pressure limited

Thought there was a velocity increase after melonite?

Would a 20" 7-08 be able to push a 175gr SMK to 2600fps?

Probably. That would be roughly equivalent to the same rifle achieving ~2700fps from a 162, which is likely.

Question is, would the 175@2600 outperform a 162@2700? Run the numbers. I think you'll see it won't until you're way way out there.

Up until recently I had decided that when I rebarrel my 700 action I was gonna go with .260 Remington.

Then I saw the external ballistics on the 7-08, and it is very impressive.

How's the 7-08 recoil, compared to .308 Winchester and .260 Remington?

Long range 7-08 loads with heavy bullets are on par with, or slightly heavier than 308 for recoil. 260 has substantially less.

Does anyone have powder suggestions for the Berger 180gr hybrid? 4350 still a top choice for a 26" barrel?

I'd expect H4350 to be near perfect for a 180 in 708. Maybe some RL17, to get smore bang because you'll be hurting for case capacity with that bullet.

That said, run some numbers in JBM. You'll find the ~160s are better suited to the small furnace of the 708.

Brass brand matters, inc. capacity/pressure...just want folks to work up to the loads they see here for their rifles, and brass....for safety.
