7.62x39 upper

I have been searching for a good hog hunting upper. And I have been tossing around a 6.5 or 6.8. Well I realized that they also make a 7.62x39 upper. Anyone have experience with them? Im settled on this caliber because I don't have any rifle in this caliber. And this will be perfect because ammo is cheap, and its a great hog caliber. (And SHTF) Ive searched around for an upper in stock, but of course I cant find one (I didn't really expect too find one for awhile anyways)

Do a quick search of 7.62x39 uppers. There are a lot of reported problems with them on AR's as the AR magazine well does not do well with a tapered round like the 7.62x39. That round requires a curved magazine while any AR mag has to be straight on the upper portion that inserts into the mag well. This leads to various round feeding and jamming issues but various people have varying amounts of success with different mag/upper combos. RRA has announced the LAR-47, which has a modified AR lower designed to accept standard 7.62 mags, but who knows when this product will ever be released. I'm still hopeful and hope to purchase one whenever they come out.

I am a Troy Muzzle Break away from calling mine finished. I have 0 feeding problems. I have 0 firing or ejecting issues. I absolutely love mine. The biggest smile is when the guy next to me spends 3x on .223 ammo. The magazines are built specific for AR15 lowers which go straight up into the mag well.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. What I can tell you is the Russian primer is hard stuff so a 7.62 specific firing pin (besides bolt carrier) is a must.

That's a nice rifle! For close/medium range, I think the 7.62x39 is perfect. Ammo is cheap, bullet will work wonders on hogs.

I have a DoubleStar Star 15 chambered in 7.62x39 and have zero issues. ASC makes 30 round mags for the cartridge and shooting steel cased berdan primed ammo I have had not one issue with jams, double feeds or failure to chamber. I do recommend that you get the MGI bolt and firing pin combo to handle the harder primers. It runs like a big black wet dream. To anyone who says that the magazines have feed issues they A) either don't own a x39 AR or B) heard from someone that this problem existed in the past. Some companies would change the follower on a 556 mag and sell it as a x39 mag, which caused feed issues. Substandard supplier X internet propagating incorrect information = untrue assessments. Attached is a pic of my girl shooting it, the mag looks quite awkward but runs great.

I've had one for a couple years now, one of the older olympic builds. it came second hand with four or five mod'd ak mags. The only feeding problem I've had is the feed lips on the magazines getting bent. The sst stuff from hornady is what I shoot out of it mostly now. It works great on game, coyotes or hogs.

Check ASC. They bought out C-Products a while back and my C-Products x39 mags have been running well for me for years now.

Wasn't there a shootout that has the PWS kicking everyone's ass in this caliber? I can't find it, but they really tortured the piss out of the PWS and it didn't mess up.

As others have stated magazine issues were the primary hiccup not sure how PWS using the same mag isn't having issues. LAR was making a lower that took AK47 lowers, and if you took that, PWS upper, you might have found harmony.

Now, I am sure this is going to get me flamed, but my Sig 551 impresses the piss out of me except for the trigger. And if they fixed their problems with their 556r I'd be one happy gorilla, as it would appear to be what I would like best. Light, folder, AK mags, optic mounting is easy and cleaning is boring easy.

I've got one. Runs 100% with steel or brass case. I use c-products mags. Perfect for hogs out to 150 +/-

While ASC acquired equipment formerly owned by C-Products LLC, I don't think it was via a purchase. More along the lines of a legal dispute.

The people of C-Products are back with new equipment and operating as C-Products Defense. Mags are available through LCJ Wholesale.

If I were to leave it iron sighted and use it as a (Keep it simple) rifle, then yes an AK would fit perfect. But I plan on mounting a cheap low-mag optic on it for hogs and plinking.

For an AR upper I would look at the 300 Blackout. The round was purpose built to work in the AR platform with a .30 cal bullet and a case shape that feeds reliably out of standard AR magazines. Ballistically it is close to the 7.62x39 and hunting bullets are available. The ammunition will be more expensive than cheap steel case 7.62x39, but I would expect it to be more accurate as well.

The 7.62x39 was shoehorned into the AR platform by various manufacturers with varying degrees of success (some would say minimal success). The 7.62x39 introduces a few problems into the AR-15 platform. Mainly the issues associated with trying to feed the heavily tapered 7.62 case through the straight AR magwell, and the large diameter 7.62 case head on the smallish AR bolt face (doesn't leave a lot of meat and bolt lugs have been known to break). The 300 Blackout uses 5.56mm brass and avoids both of those problems.

who said there arent hunting bullets on the 7.62x39??? killed my first deer with it in 1994 with a colt ar-15 carbine in 7.62x39-with winchester pointed soft point ammo.
and there are many more manufacturers today.
