7 saum

I’m doing some load development with H4350 in a short action with 180eldm and hybrids. The 180eldm at 53.8 of h4350 is getting me 2790fps right now (almost 150 rounds down the pipe). ES out of a 3 shot group and a 5 shot group is 7fps
ADG virgin brass, 2.956 coal, 2.126 to ogive

Grafs has some
https://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/product/productId/22561 Norma makes nosler

The cases look very similar to me, they are indistinguishable except headstamp. Same shade of brass even the depth of chamfer is the same. I’m not really a fan of either myself give me ADG any day.

I’ve got a 22” barrel coming that I plan to use as a dedicated hunting barrel. I’ve got some 162 eldx laying around and a decent amount of H4350. It’s obviously not going to wring out the full potential of the cartridge, but what would be a good starting point?

@PFG sure

Defiance anTi XM action
anTi alloy rail
Defiance XM alloy BDL
Bartlein #4 CFW 22” 8.5 twist, asked them to shorten the shank by 1/2“ so to finish at 21.5”
threaded 5/8x24 with TBAC CB
Manners EH-SL stock

will use the ultra 7 until my Dominus gets out of jail.

load will be the 175 elite hunter over R23 in ADG brass. Tula LRM primers. Been sourcing the components since last summer and I’m ready to spend the summer getting ready for elk this fall!

what do you think the upper load would be closer to?
Well not knowing your brass volume I’d certainly run up to 60-60.5 and maybe 61 for 2950 ish.
2950 with 180’s didn’t trash brass at all for me.

3000 is starting to get a bit shifty

I’m running 2880 with 190’s with the same brass from my first barrel.
That was the load you shot on my rifle.

Ok fellas need some advice. My first 7mm ive messed with. Doing a 7 saum on a terminus long action Zeus. Got a bartlein 5r 1-8.25 33 inch blank. Have rl26. H1000. Wana shoot 190 berger lrht or 190 a tip. A tip shows ill need a 1-8 for my altitude of 500 or so. But i think itl b ok with the 1-8.25. Looking for recommendations of coal for both bullets to have smith set the freebore at and what length to do the barrel for optimum speed. 28-32 ? Appreciate any help thanks

The 190LRHT is pretty happy at 3.07-3.1ish inches
Should have plenty neck left but good case capacity.

Digging this up again... anybody played with N565? I have a pile of it, N570, and RL26. 565 has been good to me in the past so that is what I’m trying first. Ran a ladder test to see where i would find pressure. 59-64 grains with 175 Berger and 184 Berger... didn’t get any signs at all. 22” barrel on a loan peak LA, .210 freebore. Figured i would start seeing something around 63 grains... nothing. Loaded 2.400 CBTO. I am sure the barrel will speed up another 70 FPS after break in but i wouldn’t mind knowing where pressure starts.

I didn’t see pressure until maybe 2840 FPS with a fresh long throated 22” hells canyon carbon with h1000 and 175 eldx

I found an accurate load using:

Norma brass
Federal 215M
59.5 gr of R26
Berger 180 VLD seated long, bearing surface past SNJ, 2900 FPS
Defiance XM action
25" Bartlein M24 carbon fiber barrel, 1: 8.5 T

What powder and r u running them long. Some guys claim they seen 3k with 25-26 inch barrels
R26 at 3.07 long.
There’s no way in hell they are getting 3K in a 25-26”barrel without being over pressure and inviting brass and primer drama.
My last barrel is 20 fps faster than my previous one and 2860 I think is a more realistic load for that length.
My new barrel is 30” but it’s too new to get an accurate speed yet.
I’d be plenty happy with 3K.

Kinda what i thought. My is being built now. 32 inch. With coal of 3.175 with 190 a tips. So there at the shoulder kneck junction. Really wana see 3k is the goal. Have rl26. H1000. To try

Does anyone offer a factory match load for 7 SAUM?
7mm is one of those bore diameters that are never supported by factory match offerings.
The 7x57 has been around since 1892 and is an excellent cartridge, no match loads
7-08 very similar in performance, very accurate. No match loads.
.280 and .280 AI, the AI approaches 7mm Rem Mag capability. Both very accurate. No match loads.
7mm Rem Mag, the most popular 7 bore there is. Very capable long range round. No match loads and almost universally loaded with lightweight bullets. (most factory loads top out at 150 grains, though there are some outliers)
7 SAUM, I don't think anyone even catalogs ANY factory ammo for it though I could be wrong.
The list goes on.

That's a shame. There are some 7SAUM factory loads but they are all hunting oriented and rather pricey. I just like the idea of a long range 1500-2000 yard caliber in a short action. Reloading wasn't my thing when I had a 650 and it's most certainly not the time to get back into it now lol. I don't want to rely on others to load for me either so I guess I'll let the 7 SAUM ship sail. Perhaps I'll focus on a long action caliber that has factory support like the 300 Norma.

I like the lack of factory ammo for the 7 saum. Keeps it kind of special really. Not everyone is capable of having one, due to the inability or unwillingness to reload. I have an appreciation for all cartridges, but the 7 saum is one of my all time favorites.

It really is an amazing cartridge.
That’s the only reason it’s still alive.
Performance, efficiency and ballistics with 168 to 190’s is hard to beat.

Did you ever continue on this route? I have an 8 twist 7 saum for a long action TL3 on the way. I have quite a bit of n565 and H1000, want to run the 180 eldms 175 EOL’s or the 180 bergers wondering what to start with

I started way low and worked up. Probably too low. Started at 57 grains and didn’t see a slightly heavier bolt lift until 67.5 and 2940 FPS with both 175 Berger and 184 Berger. All with N565. Depending on what freebore you go with, my case was dang near full. I think you’d be safe to start at 62 grains.

N565 is almost identical to R26 and R26 is my preferred powder for 180 and above bullets especially in a standard freebore.
In a long action especially with a longer freebore H1000 is absolutely a solid choice as well but you’ll be burning about 4-5 more grains to get similar speeds.

Can someone tell me what bushing to use with ADG brass? I'd like to set final neck tension with a mandrel, so something a hair undersized would be ideal. Everything is obviously back ordered so no idea where to start.
