Finally got the weather to break and some "me time" lined up and headed to the range. I recently acquired a slightly used Remington 700 5R and wanted to see if they lived up to their reputation.
Long story short, can't leave well enough alone. Pulled my old faithful 700 out and skinned it out of the A4 w/Badger M5 bottom metal, pulled the 5R out of the factory furniture and went to town. Being that it was already bedded to my other action, the 5R fit but took a gentle bit of persuasion. Didn't want to muck up the bedding so I took my time and got everything lined out.
The 5R's bore looked pristine and for good measure, swabbed her with a round of Butch's Bore Shine. Little to no fouling in the bore and she lloked like new money. Mounted a MK4 LR/T 8.5x25 w/TMR ret. in a set of intregal Talley rings (not ideal but worked in a pinch) and lit out for the range.
Weather was a balmy 36* F, wind was calm with a few flurries. Boresighted down the bore and loaded 3 rounds of Federal 168 GMM in the 5 round AI mag. Fired 3 foulers and never looked back.
Here was my initial 5 shot string.......
Needless to say, I was tickled pink. Especially a factory action in a stock bedded for a completely different rig. Shot a total of 40 rounds during the course of the outing. Ammo used was Federal GMM, BH Match, HSM Match, PMC Match (all loaded with 168 SMK) and lastly, HSM 168 AMAX Match. All ammo was sub moa thru the 5R with Fed GMM taking top honors followed by the HSM AMAX load coming in at a .502".
With a re-bed on the A4, a good rail and rings, this one ought to be a shooter. With a bit of tweaking, I believe I can get her even tighter.
Stay tuned for further on the 5R project!
