Finally got the weather to break and some "me time" lined up and headed to the range. I recently acquired a slightly used Remington 700 5R and wanted to see if they lived up to their reputation.

Long story short, can't leave well enough alone. Pulled my old faithful 700 out and skinned it out of the A4 w/Badger M5 bottom metal, pulled the 5R out of the factory furniture and went to town. Being that it was already bedded to my other action, the 5R fit but took a gentle bit of persuasion. Didn't want to muck up the bedding so I took my time and got everything lined out.

The 5R's bore looked pristine and for good measure, swabbed her with a round of Butch's Bore Shine. Little to no fouling in the bore and she lloked like new money. Mounted a MK4 LR/T 8.5x25 w/TMR ret. in a set of intregal Talley rings (not ideal but worked in a pinch) and lit out for the range.

Weather was a balmy 36* F, wind was calm with a few flurries. Boresighted down the bore and loaded 3 rounds of Federal 168 GMM in the 5 round AI mag. Fired 3 foulers and never looked back.

Here was my initial 5 shot string.......

Needless to say, I was tickled pink. Especially a factory action in a stock bedded for a completely different rig. Shot a total of 40 rounds during the course of the outing. Ammo used was Federal GMM, BH Match, HSM Match, PMC Match (all loaded with 168 SMK) and lastly, HSM 168 AMAX Match. All ammo was sub moa thru the 5R with Fed GMM taking top honors followed by the HSM AMAX load coming in at a .502".

With a re-bed on the A4, a good rail and rings, this one ought to be a shooter. With a bit of tweaking, I believe I can get her even tighter.

Stay tuned for further on the 5R project!

Sweet deal. Try getting some handloads for your rifle and you can probably find the improvement you are seeking.

Re: 700 5R, pleasant surprise

Mine shoots great too...these are a good deal for around a thousand. The cumulative 100 yrd average for mine is .6 moa and that is 100% stock, even the mediocre/heavy trigger it came with.
With reloads only it has been a 1/2 moa rifle with several groups in the .2s.
Congrats on a great shooter - min likes Varget and 175SMKS or 165 Accubonds.

Re: 700 5R, pleasant surprise

see thats what I am talking about.right out of the box accuracy.even the 223 does the same.but like one has already said loading for it will bring the groups in tighter.and thats with a 168gn or 175gn bullet.most use varget but 4064 will work all so.great group by the way.

Re: 700 5R, pleasant surprise

The couple of 5R's that I've seen had pretty big cold bore offsets, on the order of 1MOA. Has anybody else noticed this? Or is this just my observation? Or this something that a full bedding job will address?

Re: 700 5R, pleasant surprise

I've got one of these being shipped to my local FFL. Anyone care to share a preferred hand load for their 5r? Or, is that a liability thing. I totally understand if it is.

More like .5 MOA with mine...but all my rifles shoot cold bore shots like that.

Re: 700 5R, pleasant surprise

As for CB, if you look at the group I posted above, the top hole is the cold bore. I ran 8 five shot groups on my initial outing with the rifle. There was not a discernable difference in the cold bore shot to make an issue. I allowed the barrel to come back to ambient temp. between strings of fire. If anything, cold bore was almost spot on.

Re: 700 5R, pleasant surprise

My CB is right on the dot now after I stop cleaning the rifle after each range trip.

One range trip I tried it 3 times, let the barrel cool down completely and shot CB targets (2 targets on one paper, CB on the left and 3shot group on the right). First one we couldn't see the bullet hole from bench and found out at target change that the aiming dot on the paper is same size as .308 bullet hole, and it was right on. The next 2 CB were off by 0.2"and 0.3", I see that might most likely be the shooter.

Re: 700 5R, pleasant surprise

Nice shooter. My 5R wore a McM A4 and shot real well out of the box too. For an out of the box rifle at the price it is hard to beat IMO.

Re: 700 5R, pleasant surprise

diggler,

Would have to agree with you on the 5R. Hard to beat for an outta the box rifle. Had to see how she'd run in the A4 and anxious to see how much I can wring out of her.

A little A4 porn for you.....
