700 5R vs HMR Pro

I can get a 700 5r gen 2 for 775. The hmr pro is around 1500. Im worried the cheek piece on the 700 is going to be too low. Ill definitely have to add a trigger to the 700 as well. Ive read that the hmr stock is cheap feeling and the cheek piece gives alot of trouble.

What are the odds the 5R will shoot as good or better than the begara? Is the cost savings worth it? What would u do?

You can build the cheek piece up with some foam. It ain’t pretty, but it works.

no experience with Begaras, so can’t comment if it’s worth it or not

I had to build my cheek piece up with foam on my pro (although admittedly I followed Steiner CS who told me to purchase Xtra high rings, and it's too high). I don't think the half inch difference would matter that much for me though. The cheek piece would still be maxed out in height, as I have around half an inch or more of foam. I like a high cheek weld though, so YMMV.

As far as accuracy goes, I can't say what the 5R would do, but my pro shoots a very consistent 0.6 moa, with eld x handloads and with factory eld m. A better shooter could probably shoot less than 0.5.

I bought a kydex adjustable cheek piece then drilled holes in my 5r stock and mounted it.. works great and doesn't look terrible.

The cheek piece will be too low and the triggers suck on the 700. However, I think once you replace those with what you want, you’ll have a very capable rifle.

I’ve had both rifles and though it’s blasphemy, I had issues with the Bergera, but you’ll find guys that have had issues with 700’s, too. It all comes down to what you want. You can find used Trigger Techs here everyday, then save for a decent stock and you’ll be set on the 700. Then it won’t be a rifle that feels “cheap” for $1,500.

5r's typically shoot quite well Bergara's too. I'd go with the Bergara if you like the stock if you dont get the 5r and maybe you can try to sell the HS stock and bottom metal and put it in whatever you like.

While I agree you could get a good one, the odds are against it. There are plenty of other makers who produce a far better out of the box experience, why roll the dice on Remington?

The stocks on the bergara rifles do feel cheap! Get that 5r for half the price and put a stock pack on it. The hs precision stocks are much nicer than the plastic bergara ones!

I think the OP was more or less asking if the Bergara was $900 better than a 700 5r and the answer is no. I'm glad your happy with your $1600 Bergara...

I'm thinking about putting my 5r in a Grayboe Renegade and doing the Taylor Percision cheek riser mod. Turns it into one sexy looking rifle IMO.

Yeah but it's double the price. My AIAX costs more and personally I think it's that much better than a Bergara. What's being said isn't "is it that much better" but more like is it worth the extra cost to you which is up to the individual to decide.

Value wise the 5R is going to be a better deal. For what you would spend on the Bergara you could add $900 worth of accessories to the Remington once you sold the factory stock.

What I mean is the Remington is very accurate, the Bergara is accurate to but the $900 extra isn’t going to buy you any better accuracy than the 5r. The extra $900 is for all the upgrades already on the Bergara.

Keep in mind, Remmy seel two different 5R rifles.
One is the 5R mil-spec the other is the 5R gen2.
It looks like the primary difference is the original was stainless steel while the Gen 2 is carbon steel.
Yes, you WILL need to add cheek height to the remmy.
A stock pack with mouse pad underneath, cut to fit is the easiest way to accomplish this.
I'm a fan of the Tac-ops stock pack, about 47 bones.
The trigger is serviceable, they can usually be set around 3.5 pounds and are frequently very crisp, however, if you try to set them lower, they become very inconsistent.

Thanks for all the replies. I think im leaning more towards the hmr pro. It just doesn’t sound like bergara has near the qc issues as Remington and it sounds like the stock isnt as bad as I thought on the hmr. So i wont have to buy a stock, a trigger, and i will have mag capability...although that is a nice feature id be content with a floor plate if i had to be i suppose. It looks like i can get a pro for around 1300 so the price gap has closed a bit which also plays into the decision.
As far as the howa goes I really dont think i want a chassis rifle...I want to be able to use the gun as a hunting rifle if I decide i want to. I do own a Weatherby vanguard in .257 mag though and its probably my favorite deer rifle. Very accurate and very good factory trigger for a hunting rifle.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with the bergara, but it is, in essence, a chassis rifle.

The stock is very similar to the KRG bravo in execution and uses detachable magazines.

5r .260 barreled action I got, McMillan stock and Timney trigger. I’d take this any day over a Bergara. I probably have the same amount in this for what the pro goes for. She doesn’t feel cheap.

Thats a very nice setup. I"m leaning towards a Rem 700 Magpul Enhanced with a 20" 6.5Cm barrel. Then I wanna swap the stock out for a Grayboe Terrain for more of a traditional hunting rifle. I'm setting it up for my son to hunt with. I've got a Bergara Premier Ridgeback and its a very nice rifle, however its no longer in the Ridgeback stock. That just didn't feel great to me, so I put it in a KRG Bravo which I absolutely love. I'd say that the Bergara Premier actions are nice, nicer than the standard Remingtons, as I haven't handled a 5R gen 1 or 2. $900 better is a lot to say though. Personally, if I was looking at those two I'd get the Remington and put some money into it and you'll still be ahead of what you'd have spent on the Bergara.

Just curious if the magpul enhanced is stainless or carbon steel. I know the obvious differences like the stocks, rail, and bipod.

I used to have an HMR Pro and really liked it. The trigger is excellent, the action is smooth. The stainless, fluted bolt is really nice too. Overall, a very solid rifle. I sold it when I had my 6mm BRA made.

Also, I never felt like the stock "felt cheap" or was like plastic.

That is a pretty looking rifle. For what it’s worth I have a bergara hmr pro and love it. And the additional price tag also gets a better bolt action than the standard bergara and rem 700 and cerakoted for durability. It’s got some nice touches to it that make it last and run smoother in my opinion. Stock for me is meh tho, I’m now thinking of that grayboe with the mod now...

The difference is barrel twist. The 5r gen 2 is 1-11.25 vs 1-10.

I feel like you would be a step ahead of the Bergara with the 5r in an inexpensive chassis like the KRG Bravo or MDT Oryx. Just sayin.
