I've searched the hide and google....I've found a lot of answers but none are consistent.

I've got a Rem 700 action going into a Manners T4 stock. I've looked for torque settings for the action and found answers ranging from 25 up to 75 inch pounds. I've seems guys say they torque at different settings, 25 in front and 45 on the rear, and I've seen others say it's critical that the torque specs are identical.

So what's the deal?

I'm thinking 60 inch pounds on both screws is what I remember but I want to make sure.

You'd think on an action so commonly worked on that there would be some standard everyone went by.

Is it because different stocks require different numbers?

If you have steel bottom metal 65 inch pds is enough. If the factory aluminum bottom metal is used 45-50 inch pds. Anymore and you can crack/break it. I tighten both to same specs and in 30yrs of hunting/shooting have never had a need or seen a need to tighten anymore than that. Just my .02 cents worth though.

Never read on here or anywhere else anything other than tightening front and rear to same torque! YMMV

Respectfully,
Dennis

Talk about generic information, a person needs to go by the manufacturers reccomendations!

Re: 700 action torque specs, can't get straight answer

You are right, the numbers and opinions on the net are all over the place.

My rifle stocks are all pillar bedded, some Manners and some others and I run both guard screws at 45 in/lbs. I tested them from 40-65 in/lbs and my zero or accuracy did not change so I picked a setting and left it alone.

The calibers range from 243 to mags with heavy bullets. To me, it's all in the bedding and then it just needs to be tight enough so the action stays put. More than that just stresses the bolts.

Might want to test and see what works for you just be careful on torquing a non-pillar bedded stock too tight as the material will start to compress. Definately over time it will without the support of the pillar.

Re: 700 action torque specs, can't get straight answer

Just for reference-

I called GAP after receiving my Crusader, and was told their spec is 35 inch pounds on the action screws.

I also have a Remington 5R in a Mcree's chassis, and it seems to like a torque value of 50 inch pounds much better than anything lighter.

Cheers... Jim

Why don't you call Manners and be done with it?

Re: 700 action torque specs, can't get straight answer

On my 700 in a McM A5 I've found a good torque to be 50 in*lbs. Anything more seems like its too much. Doesn't seem to shoot any different from 45-65.

Re: 700 action torque specs, can't get straight answer

This is what Remington says:

"Synthetic & wood stocks should be hand tight, which is 30 to no more than 35 inch pounds. The Sendero & Police stocks are tightened to 45 inch pounds from the factory."

This is what Mike at Tac Ops was quoted as saying:

"At Tac Ops I will normally set the front action screw at 70 & the rear at 65.... Shoot I am giving away my 1/4 MOA secret"
